The midrange in music, how important?

I think this discussion to some extent, reflects the time & "effort" we (AKers) put into our music. I suspect the HI Fi sound is alive & well & selling like crazy at the local Best Buy. A portion of those buyers will come to appreciate music differently & may decide a different sound is more rewarding. And I'm not being condescending, If you like to dance & party, it would be idiocy to spend the kind of money it takes to produce a more well rounded sound..............or, I could be completely wrong.

I recall a party years ago where the turntable was suspended from a shelf by springs and they were pumping four massive Cerwin Vegas through a Crown amp. I don't believe I heard a whole lot of mid range or anything else. Just mud. But I think you're right- that's the sound I hear from most car stereos around town and all that. I didn't know the difference for a long time, either.
