More Class-A than ever!
Felt I needed to share the knowlege I've gained on the MS400 in the time I've owned them for those who care. As far as I can tell, there's three versions of these speakers;
The first and original late 60s design used a 10" woofer, along with a KEF T15 mid/tweeeter and the Coles 4001K super tweeter.
The next revision saw the 10" woofer dropped in favor of an elliptical EMI 92390GF woofer. I've been told this was done to avoid paying purchase tax in the UK by claiming the speakers are "Professional grade" therefore making them exempt. (early 70s)
The final and last revision (My version) the KEF T15 was replaced with what I assume is a A/D/S 2" mid/tweeter with a custom baffle made specifically for the MS400. (Mid 70s)
From what I can tell from the brochures these speakers where made to order and are pretty rare, I've yet to see a model with a serial no. higher than 3000.
All the brochures I've managed to acquire.
I've had about five months to get acquainted with these speakers and I still love them, they have a very soft sound, on the warmer side of neutral and have oodles of mid range clarity and detail. That EMI woofer also puts in some good work and reaches down pretty far into the high 20Hz range, even on the floor the mid bass is clear with no boom to speak of. The Coles 4001's speak for themselves.
