The most difficult audio choice.

First look what I brought home today :banana:
Yes, they are HPM-100!!! And a very nice Pioneer SA-706. Sweet 60 WPC.
But my wife finally said "Enough!"
So I have to get rid of something. SA-706 is an easy one - don't really need it.
But really difficult choice is: leave my beloved EPI-202 or HPM-100? :tears::tears::tears:
I love EPI sound! And they are really in excellent condition. So are HPMs. And you all know how they sound. But there will be only one pair of speakers in a living room.
Honestly I don't know what to do.

What to do???

Not really. I already have more speakers than rooms to put them in.
And I have to admit: they way EPI sound (their two side drive placement) fills the room perfectly.
I doubt I can find a placement for HPMs to do the same.
On the other hand they are HPM-100 !!!!!!!!!

Let me be the first one to suggest the wife.....:D

Just kidding, of course.

Play them both for a week and keep the ones you like the best all around. The HPMs will bring more $$ though.

I have home theater setup downstairs with Mirage M5si as mains. Sell them? No way!
The other room allows only small speakers. I have Mission bookshelves there.
Living room as I mentioned has EPIs. And there are JBL monitors 4408 in my office (not much room there too.
And house rules say no stereo in a bedroom. And kids don't want large speakers in their rooms also.
Crap! I have to start building an addition to the house!

Play them both FOR HER with music you both enjoy and ask her to vote. I may be biased, but I somehow thing the EPI's will win out?

I got these for $39 bucks. Tested them all to make sure everything worked and couldn't listen to a full song on them. I sold them all the same week. Honestly I don't get the HPM thing:thumbsdn: In fact the guys that bought them both said they were not what they expected.

GLADIATOR 335....Hide them in the attic + crawlspace...shed + truck .........like I do!! I got so many fricken speakers...I don't know what to do!!! Passed a pair of Large Advent's on Saturday for $20.00 at VV...Have sold many over the years + parted lots out!! Just rare + sweet deals, may enter my kingdom now! ...but I need to do a good spring cleaning on my crawl space...I have a few low end speakers & empty boxes in the dungeon, to purge!!! I have taken 2x pickup truck loads of boxes away in the past to the wood recycler + landfills... but made $$ on the drivers!!...to buy more??

Get smaller speakers.

You can fit A BUNCH of Mini Advents, Infinitesimals, Sequerra Met 7s, and mini-monitors from pro companies like Westlake Audio and Genelec in the space of just ONE pair of HPM-100s. Mix and match them up with ONE good subwoofer with an adjustable crossover point, and you have a bunch of different-sounding systems without using up a lot of space!

I'm only half jesting. In the past year, I've bought several pairs of small speakers, as I've pretty much run out of room for more big ones. The small ones can be fun, and can sound surprisingly good, not just for their size, but overall, if you pick good ones and just fill in the low bass.

I'll still get big ones, but only if they are a clear upgrade over something I have and am willing to part with. That happens increasingly seldom as most of the speakers I have now are ones that I like a lot, so I (sometimes reluctantly) pass by a lot of good speakers now!

I'm also nearing the point where the HPM-100s will be the "low man on the totem pole", and I'll have to think about letting them go, too... I probably already would have, but am probably somewhat influenced by the avid fan base they have around here.

Those ESS speakers at that price were a steal. Well done! :thmbsp:

...but passing on La Scalas? I would have gotten rid of the bed and put them where the bed had been, put a thick plywood board over them, and slept atop them until I could afford a bigger home to use them in...

Well, I say that I would. Actually, here in Hong Kong I've had to pass on more GREAT speakers than I would ever want to think about. It's too depressing. I choose to focus on the good ones I HAVE got. Similarly, just enjoy the AMT-1s and others, and let go of the ones that were not. Otherwise, you'll torture yourself to death!
