The most difficult audio choice.

Actually I did some listening yesterday. Basically A/B between EPIs and HPMs.
And you know what? I agree with those who expressed some degree of disappointment in HPMs! It's all there: highs, lows, mids, but EPI soundstage is impossible to beat and EPIs just sound much "softer" to my ear.
So it looks like I had already my share of HPM craze and their fate is pretty much sealed.
I just hate to think what will happen if I stumble upon pair of Klipschorns!
 
Sorry to hear that your ditching the HPM's. We all hear differently. With proper placement they can sound sound good.
 
FWIW, the pair of HPM 100's I had only lived in my apt. for a couple of months before I passed them on. Their sound just wasn't for me. Choosing between them and your EPI's wouldn't be too hard for me.
 
Don't feel bad about the HPMs. I had the same thing happen to me. I was THRILLED to get a pair for next to nothing and I dragged those huge beasts home, plugged them in and my first thought was "this is what all the hype is about?". Then I just had to remind myself that we are all listening to different music, for different reasons, and have different experience with gear. What I listen for is not what the HPMs do well, and I gave them to a friend in trade for all the free records he's given me over the past couple of years.

I still have several pair of EPIs, by the way....including some omnidirectional ones.

Remember she had tolerated his audio excesses for a long time. There is a time when being a man means "to yield".
 
Is there any chance that you can make the case with your wife that both the EPIs and HPMs sound better when raised off the floor and that distance happens to be the height of the other pair of speakers? Just a thought. House plants look better raised above the floor, speakers sound better raised above the floor.

Perhaps some jewelry is in order.

I'm lucky. My wife very rarely wear any jewelry. To be perfectly honest I'm lucky to be married to her for a bunch of other reasons too.
But the trick with raised speakers wouldn't fly :tears:
Besides I did some more listening (from rock to classics and jazz) and it just confirmed: HPM is not my kind of speaker.
Plus my youngest is a freshman at Duke. I am happy to make some extra bucks just to pay for her books :tears:
 
Selling them and making money is always great. Good used speakers also make fantastic gifts to the right people.
 
You made the right choice imho. I keep a pair of hpm 100's around just for kicks but I'd have to agree that the epi's are a few steps up the ladder soundwise.
 
You made the right decision, HPMs come along quite often, EPI 202s... not so much. :thmbsp:

I have a habit to watch eBay often. And I don't remember anybody selling 202s.
Or may be I missed them. Doesn't matter. I got them about 3 years ago in an excellent condition. And enjoy them since then. Probably it's time to recap, but sound is awesome! I had countless Advents, KLH, Polks, Infinities, etc from the same era. And some of them were excellent sounding speakers (didn't like old KLH though). However none came even close in soundstage and some unique soft sound.
And my wife, who doesn't really have a "music" ear, loves only two pairs of speakers: EPI and Mirage M5si. And I totally agree with her on that (and everything else).
