The official AK golf thread

While the Open at Oakmont was exciting, it was more of a car crash/demolition derby.
Yeah, the weather didn't help matters any. But I watched the last round and saw players still trying to grip it and rip it, only to lose their drives out of bounds into no-man's land. Not the way to do it on a course like that.

We’re not talking enough about the high level of golf Spaun had to play over 4 days to keep the lead and win there.
Mad respect for his sustained focus to grind this one out.
And yes, not a very pretty course, Oakmont.

Bummed out today, my 8:50 am T-time today was cancelled because the course and RV park was evacuated because of a 14 hectare forest fire near the course. I hope they get the fire sorted out before my Friday T-time, and I hope we have a course left. :(

Yaaaaay!!! They put the fire out and my course is safe and open again, played Friday and didn't have a bad round for me although I was 7 strokes better on the front 9. Shot a 93 with 29 putts. My short game was on the money and I used an old King Cobra driver as the shaft broke on my fave Cleveland Launcher. Gotta get my driver figured out soon.

I had to come somewhere to complain as my wife is tired of hearing from me. For the last 5 years I had been playing in a good foursome in my Tuesday Senior league. One guy roughly 10 years older than me with a respectable 17 handicap (Tom) and 2 elderly gentlemen, one of whom was a 10 handicap when younger and the other man not so good but kept moving so as not to slow down play. This year my buddy Tony, the better of the two, left since he moved too far away to drive to the course, a big loss in my estimation.
In his place another elderly gentleman who had been out of the league for a few years rejoined and got placed with our group. The guy has dementia, rarely says a word and moves at a snails pace. Unable to walk too far he drives the cart right next to the green, I’m talking between the traps and the green. I guess he was a decent player when younger as he can still hit it off the tee but we finally had to convince him and the other older player (a combined 175 between them), to move up to the ladies tees so as to reach the fairway, as these courses have fairly long wet rough in the early am.
So I have spent this year as a guide dog/caddy for these guys. They can’t follow the ball anymore and think they hit it much further than they actually do. I am running back and forth across the fairways pointing out where there ball is and or went. Here I thought my caddy days were over.
To say the current setup has been detrimental to my game is an understatement. My lone other player, Tom, had eye surgery 2 weeks ago and left me to my own devices. I lasted 1 week and took last week off as I just couldn’t face playing a round with them. Today they threw in another older man to play and he was very nice but on the first tee he told me he suffered from short term memory loss. He was very sharp on describing where he worked in Manhattan and such but could not remember where he just hit his drive 40 seconds ago.
So I spent today in the dementia ward, shepherding an elderly threesome around the track. The guy who joined us today, Jay, said about the dementia sufferer, ‘there but for the grace of God go I.” That bought me another hour of patience but I am not that good of a person and ran out shortly after. At this point I would rather not play than face another Tuesday in my current foursome. Thanks for allowing me to rant.

You can't play golf like that. I know I can't. I used to play with 2 buddies who were so bad it affected my game. One guy was more interested in looking for golf balls than playing, the other was just awful. The sad part was they had no interest or ambition to try to improve. I stopped playing with them altogether and my game improved. My advice is gracefully opt out and find another group or just play by yourself. Good luck!

I hear you. There has been a lot of grumbling about the pace of play this year with rounds running to 4 1/2 hours or sometimes longer. Personally anything over 4 hours and I lose interest. The head of the league asked for suggestions and I mentioned that anyone who can’t play in under 4:15 should not be allowed to tee off in the first 2 hours of play. Other members suggested forming a “Super Seniors” group that would tee off after the rest of the group and only on the shorter of the 2 courses. Turning them into a “9 and dine” group. I am all for that. The pro and owners of the courses have been putting pressure on our group for faster play as well as more accurate number of players as 100 players sign up to play and then 82 show up, screwing the course out of several tee times. Hopefully a reasonable solution can be found.

I am having a similar experience to some extent with pickleball in our community. There is a community group that pretty much dominates time on our 2 courts. However within the group there are various levels of skill and for lack of a better term “fitness”. Rather than recognize these differences you have to play within the group which can be very frustrating when paired with or playing against someone who struggles at even the most basic level. I just had to make the decision to play elsewhere outside of the community with others more at my level of play. Less frustrating and it helps the quality of my game.

49 degrees and bright sunshine, so off for a quick 9 holes with my friends for the inaugural round of ‘26. Temporary greens took some of the fun out of it as did the endless carpet of goose crap that covered the course. Still it was good to get out there and surprisingly hit some nice drives off the tee. 3 “pars” were about what I was hoping for. The ball was not flying too far but to get some swings in during January was a treat. Play well in 2026.

My son in law asked me if I wanted to play tomorrow. 46 and chance of showers so no thanks. I'm too old to play when it's cold.

It's 25 degrees and gloomy here at the Jersey Shore. Snow is in the forecast tomorrow and Monday's low will be 11. It's a boring Saturday with little to do. God I'm ready for spring and going to the course and losing some golf balls. I'm heaed to a great local bar for lunch with a buddy. If I can't play golf I'll drink beer.

Is anyone thinking about playing golf? The weather here is improving after a cold and snowy winter. We actually had temps in the 70's and 80 one day. I couldn't get out but I'm starting to get the itch.

The Players Championship this week. There's been talk about it for years of becoming the 5th Major, but I doubt that will happen. It will be interesting to see how the field sorts out by Sunday.

I'm bummed out. The grounds crew has been out working on the course for about a week and last night they got a 2-3 inch dump of snow. I hope it doesn't delay opening day by too much. :(

Finally yesterday my course announced that opening day is March 26 and I have the first tee time of the year on that day. I can't hardly wait, put new cleats in the old Footjoys yesterday and will be cleaning out the bag and cleaning the clubs in prep for the day. :)
