The Official Harman Kardon H/K Citation Owners Thread

That's a nice write-up on the Citation A, thanks for the link. Apparently at least a few reviewers were impressed that they ranked it at least, if not better , than the Citation 1 in SQ. I will have to compare it with some other preamps I currently have, including the Eleven, as well as some tube units.

Posted in the Mitchell Cotter Audiophile gear thread I started but I thought I would post here too. I recently purchased a very extensive Audiophile setup: HK Citation XX Amplifier, HK Citation X-1 Amplifier (still in the box), Custom M A Cotter Turntable using the Technics SP10 MK3 w/ Fidelity Research FR-64fx Tonearm (Silver), RS-141 Headshell, Gas Sleeping Beauty Cartridge, M A Cotter Moving Coil Pick up transformer MK2 L, Cotter Master Power Supply, M A Cotter Series 3 Cntl Modl CM 3 Pre-Amp (so rare I can't even find anything doing a google search about the series 3?). A ton of custom Cotter cables includes speaker cables used for the set of B&W speakers.
I learned 3 weeks after acquiring all of this that the family members of the original owner had the empty wooden box for the HK Citation XX in the back of the garage which they found after moving everything out. I went to pick up the box and to my surprise it wasn't empty!! This acquisition is the gift that keeps on giving. All the way in the back of the garage unopened/untouched for 35 years was a Harmon Kardon Citation XX unused in the wooden box is. So I now have a second Citation XX in case someone is interested. No sure what the going rate for one of these new in it's original wooden box. Serial number 01240 and it's in absolutely beautiful condition. Box showing serial number 01241 which is the other Citation XX that I'm keeping it was used in the music room and shows some signs of use.

Wow, that is impressive....!

Just got my 17 back from full rebuild, man is it sweet...quite happy and it’s not going anywhere...

Hi all - while I'm waiting for my guy to tune up my Citation Receiver, I'd like to ask the Hive Mind here if they can help me piece together the history/facts about this, frankly, amazing receiver. I'm just kind of gobsmacked that something this exquisite is such a mystery in the audiophile world. IMHO it also just stomps all over any Marantz or Mac you might choose. Here's what I (think I) know:
  • it was a 'limited edition', hand made in Plainview?
    • 1976-1977?
    • 800-1000 units?
    • Was it a special order only? Built to order? Available in select stores?
  • Rated at 85WPC, but I think that that the amp section was the same as the Citation 19 (100WPC.)
  • I can't find any advertisements/ad copy for it, never mind a review, except for the ad here that I found, eh, somewhere (I forget).
So, a kind request:
  1. Can any H/K vets out there tell me (us) more about the Citation Receiver, its development, marketing, etc?
  2. If anyone knows where I can find actual printed ads or reviews, can you point me to where/when they might have been published?
    1. along those lines, if you have actual printed ads or reviews, I would be very grateful for a high quality scan. I would love to have a high quality ad such as the one I attached, that I can frame for my listening room.
    2. Lastly, there was an elaborate literature package prepared for the Receiver. If you have a copy that you'd be willing to sell - or an original copy of the manual - hit me up in my DMs.
Thanks! Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

Good luck in finding info on Citation gear online. I found more on this site by searching it than just about anywhere else. Rare gear is cool, but information like you're looking for is largely non existent. Look at my Sig line and ask me how I know.;)

Breaking my silence here. If the powers that be of AK allowed a Harmon Kardon thread to exist in their manufactures Forum then I suspect the information, if it were on AK would be much easier to find. For no good reason offered when Inquired by many members here it does not exist.
No historically significant audio company exists in the USA has such a rich, mostly unknown array of outstanding Audio Equipment, is excluded by AK. In fact there are lessor Manufacturers which are not very well known on the list, certainly less then HK ,which do have a place.
https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php#audiokarma-manufacturers-forums.136.
I suppose it's better to have it scattered through out the multiple forums, divided by years and contributors in order to keep it lessened, somehow.
I stopped contributing to the subject here, even though I enjoy so much, the product. Keep searching is what they want.

I’m kind of new around here, but that seems, um, dumb. They’ve got an Eico thread, but no H/K? What’s the big deal?

Sigh.

To elaborate on my earlier post, I found exactly one review each on the Citation 16 and 22. From what I've been able to ascertain the Citation gear didn't have a particularly large dealer network, or a large following and therefor there just isn't that much info that has surfaced in recent years.
If you're going to pair that Citation receiver with those Allison 3s you're in for a treat. I had the big 16 paired with my Twos and it was a great match. The thing got it bumped out of the main rig was the aquisition of the Kenwood L-09M monoblocks and the rest of the L series gear. The Citation amps are very sweet sounding powerful pieces, and I'm sure that Citation receiver will sound very similar. :beerchug:

Before I dropped the Citation off, I ran the Threes off it, and man, they really popped. They sounded as good as when I had my HK990 connected.

I have, and often! That's where I found the Citation Receiver manual and service manual. But thanks for the reminder to return and explore a bit more (the brochures/literature section, in particular.)

I'll start with my history, I was in college 1974-1978, full time and worked for Audio Center in Buffalo, NY, also full time. We were the Harman Kardon, Marantz, JBL dealer for Buffalo! What a time to work in the Audio business. This is the time when the HK 16, 17 and 18 first hit he market. The 16 was our premier amp, it blew to doors off the Marantz 510M. It was also the beginning of receiver wars, so we had the Marantz 2325, 2270 and all the high power receivers. When the Citation receiver came out, they did not publish any power specs, they felt they didn't need to, they were Citation. This didn't help sell the unit, people were only interested in watts per channel not superior quality. Citation was equal to Macintosh in build quality at he time, but did not have the same reputation or marketing exclusivity, so it was an uphill battle to sell the HK. We would sell the HK line against the Marantz all day, better sound quality and value, but you couldn't fight the wpc factor. In our sound room we had all the units set up to demo, The HK 16,17, 18 , 19 and receiver against the Marantz 3800, 510M , 150 and 2325. Full line of JBL's L100, L65, L166, L200 and L300's . We had a lot of fun back then. I still have my silver 17,18, 19 , L166's and 4301's from then. So ask your questions, I'll go dig out my Citation info.
