Then I picked these up on Sunday:
Growing tired of seeing the same unsold albums at my nearby Goodwill stores week after week, after week... I decided to head up to SW Washington and hit six Goodwill stores I had never visited. In general the selection and inventory isn't as good as the Portland area shops, but I did get lucky at the second store I visited. I was completely skunked at the other five stores, all nine of these came from that second one.
The six 80s titles are all in good shape, probably donated by the same person, and a sticker on the David Bowie indicated it had just been put out that morning - probably the same for the other 5. Some of these are duplicates (Bowie, Paul Simon, U2 and ARS), but I am always looking for better pressings and I gift the duplicates to friends and relatives (who wouldn't want a nice copy of There Goes Rhymin' Simon, Let's Dance or The Joshua Tree?).
I was an early adopter of CD technology, so I pretty much stopped buying LPs by 1984. Thanks to Goodwill, I have been slowly, but surely, back-filling my collection of 80s vinyl. I see a LOT more 70s albums at Goodwill, but > 90% of them are in horrible condition. Most of the 80s stuff I find is in great shape, probably because the original owners were also about ready to switch over to CDs. Many of these originals saw very little playing time.
The standout in this group is the Miles Davis Neferiti. It is a first stereo pressing from 1968 and in immaculate condition. I'm not a huge jazz fan, but do have a few titles I enjoy from time to time. This Miles will join that group. I played it last night and it was dead quiet.
I also played the U2 last night and it's the cleanest sounding of my three Masterdisk/DMM copies. Visually, the Rhymin' Simon looks cleaner than my other two copies. Listening to it now, and so far, it plays cleaner than my other two copies. Looking forward to spinning the Bowie next. The ARS is a Masterdisk/RL, which is almost always a good sign.
Also had dinner with a friend while I was up that way. An altogether nice ending to the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend.
