The official Music score thread

Hi AK folks,

Reading through here looks like you can still find incredible vinyl gems in American thrift stores. Generally, far less luck here in Australia unless you're a classical aficionado.

However, you can still find some great stuff cheap on Gumtree (Oz version of Craigslist) and FB Marketplace. As evidenced by my haul last week on Gumtree.

Around 50 very good condition records plus a nice 8CD Miles Davis box set. All for $260.

Jazz guitarist getting rid of his excess stuff, including a heap of Joe Pass, Larry Carlton, George Benson, Steely Dan, Pat Metheny, Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Wishbone Ash, Emerson Lake Palmer, Foreigner, Stevie Wonder, Premiata Forneria Marconi and plenty more. A real treasure trove of guitar heroics in particular.

Nice to know you can still find some quality bargains out there!

Well, this is a bit old, but I've mentioned that when I was in Seattle waiting to move to my new farm in KY, I moved out of a 5 bedroom house into a one bedroom apartment. My wife and I would hit estatesales.com and, for fun plan a tour for saturday and "half price" sunday focusing on various parts of King county and the Tacoma area. This was in 2010 era. I learned to offer ten bucks (or less) for an entire box of records. At that time, nobody was aware of any vinyl "surge" so they just wanted to get rid of them. Well, here is what I brought back one Saturday from two different five dollar boxes (I just happened on these pictures this morning) I gave about 2/3 of what I got to Goodwill each time I bought records. This is what I kept from that lot. Sadly, people think vinyl is worth more nowadays...

Yesterday's modest Goodwill score (all $2.99 each):

January-24-2021-Score-1.jpg

January-24-2021-Score-2.jpg

I cleaned them all last night and started playing them about an hour and a half ago. I'm playing them in the order shown (on Side 2 of Don't Look Back now, a double wally). The first two are definitely keepers for me.

That's my third thrift store copy of Aja and each has been better than the previous (and the first was pretty darn good). The first two were AB-1006 first pressings. This third one is a stealth AB-1006, or a fake AA-1006, depending on how you want to look at it. It has AA-1006 on the spine and labels, but AAB-1006 (with the B stuck through) in the deadwax. This indicates it was pressed from the same stampers as the AB-1006, but was sold at the higher AA-1006 price.

The Dire Straits is a real gem. My only other copy is my original RCA Music Service pressing I bought back during my freshman year of college in 1979. This Monarch pressing absolutely blows that one away. It almost sounds like a completely different record. Side 1 plays an absolutely solid NM and Side 2 is VG+ to VG++. Spectacular sounding pressing! - Dire Straits - Dire Straits

Quite a valuable haul for that kind of money! I wish I lived in a higher-rent district or something because the Salvation Army store closest to me never seems to get anything but junk.

I recently picked up copies of several you have there, including the 38 Special LP, but the Dire Straits one I got was the MoFi version, and pricey (but worth it to me.)

Don't trash talk my favorite record store......
Things have been lean there for awhile though.

Everyday. Not much there these days. Still look for other stuff though. Makes it fun.
I finally got my new "mancave" to a point where I can unload my 17 boxes of records I brought here when I moved from Seattle. As I unload them, I realized that I'm really done with "used" stuff. It's not that I didn't enjoy it. Rather, it's that I got all I need. I can't think of a single title that I'm missing and, truth be told, I have two to four copies of a few titles. I did just discover Vinyl Me Please. Monthly membership is too expensive, but I did pick up five new records from them. They are all "next level" stuff. Fun music and I love the colorful pressings. They take the whole concept of the "record owning and playing" experience to the next level. The whole package, right down to the colored vinyl, is desirable and fun. The comical part is I discovered them through Youtube videos about their crazy price increase. And it IS pretty bad.

I still glance at used stuff at antique malls and estate sales, but it's mostly just the exercise of a vestigial organ. It's hard to break old habits.

I am very patient and don't mind waiting for good records. I inspect them and try not to buy if they are too scratched. However, the other day someone posted records for free. I went through them and took titles I was interested in. Did not inspect them. For free, I didn't care.
People who say they can't find nice copies or won't buy thrift records are missing out.

I could never be able to get there every day, as I work a 7 to 3:30 job in Charlton. I want you to know how much I still appreciate the gift of LP's you gave me, and listen to them often. We need to get together sometime, I think you might appreciate the setups I have and I'd love to hear yours.

I usually get off work around 2:30. On a good day I can hit the Worcester store and the Spencer store. For music, I have had better luck in Spencer. For gear, it would be Worcester.

I've been on a real roll of late. Started a couple of months ago with a magnificent haul of about 60 records for $260 found on Gumtree (Australian Craigslist), continued with a friend's deceased estate where I picked up (was gifted) about 80 records and have been picking up some great finds, mainly CDs, in charity op shops (Goodwill type shops).

CDs are proving a real bargain at the moment, especially if you like classical and jazz, with great titles for $1-2 a piece. Everything from Oscar Peterson Trio "We Get Requests" through to Supertramp "Breakfast in America", Aphex Twin "Selected Ambient Works 2" and Mercury Rev "Deserter's Song".

Not going to post pics of everything but here are a few of the most recent finds.

Am really enjoying these two George Shearing records I picked up for $2 each, basically mint condition. Have never really listened to Shearing before but am loving these two platters. Will definitely be looking out for more.

This one with Hank Jones is gold!

Found these at a local op shop, $4 and all in great condition. Dropped into the same place last week and there was zilch, nada. Just the usual suspects that have been hanging around in the vinyl racks unloved for the past 30 years. Was dropping off bags of donations and noticed a guy walk out with a Dylan album under his arm. Hmmm... what's this then? So went in and managed a tidy score. As well as the ones in the pics below also got Stones "Tattoo You" (for my sister) and passed a Velvet Underground Greatest Hits thing on to a young guy in there after we started chatting. Have enough VU so why not share the love!

Stacks and stacks of great listening ahead!

So another nice little FB marketplace score. Four records, $5 each. Two in pretty much mint condition. Finding it's really worthwhile to regularly search terms like "jazz records" on there.

Bola Sete: Ocean
Laurindo Almeida & Bud Shank: Brazilliance
Claude Bolling Concerto: Angel Romero, George Shearing et al
Ravi Shankar & Yehudi Menuhin: West meets East

Released in 1980, the Romero & Shearing album has an interesting little note on it saying it's made from digitally-recorded master tapes using Mitsubishi Audio Systems. Now if only I had bought those Mitsubishi Diatone speakers the other week!

Really got lucky today. From a local op shop, $1 each. A couple of these are going for good money on Discogs but I'm keeping 'em!

Started hyperventilating when I saw the Morton Subotnick record! Had this very record in my Discogs cart and was ready to pay about $35 for it. Quite the score.

Purchased my first bootleg albums this weekend. I haven't been able to find much info online but the ZZ Top "Jesus Left Chicago" is a live recording from 1987 on their Afterburner tour. The Lynyrd Skynyrd "Dixie Special" is a 1976 live recording. I did read somewhere that only 300 were pressed.

I replied to an ad on Letgo this weekend, it mentioned a storage unit and albums so I set up a time to meet the owner. Not much great stuff, condition was not good. I did find a few good funk/soul records and this:

wish the condition was better but for $4 I’m not going to complain.
