Hey fellas, I was wondering if someone or two could check something out for me? When I get on my hands and knees and look at the base of the turntable................ if I look level at the base also looking at the bottom of the platter...........while it's spinning, I see the platter raising up and down about an 1/8th of an inch. Is this normal. In other words it kind of looks like the platter is warped.......... vs. riding and spinning level, if that makes any sense!
I have an old Onkyo turntable and it also moves up and down a little while spinning.
Just checking to see if all 1200's are like this, I have a SL1200MK2.

Spindles are available at a very reasonable price from technics...
Now that I've been playing the 1210 for a week or so I decided to lift the platter off to really inspect the spindle area.....
I unplugged the unit and the platter came right off.....then, ten minutes later, after reinstalling the platter, I went to take it off again so I unplugged the table and now I get resistance while trying to pull the platter...what am I doing wrong???

Actually, you should have felt a resistance the first time you removed the platter. The resistance pulling the platter up is normal. You are fighting a big magnet. That is why the platter "pops" off instead of just lifting off.
Use your fingers to hook into the holes in the platter, then using your thumbs, push down on the spindle while pulling up with your fingers. It takes a few times to get used to how much force you need to "pop" the platter off.

There was some resistance the first time it came off.....I figured the unit needed to be unplugged to shut off the magnet so I did that first.....then when I put it back on and played it then decided to pull the platter again I unplugged it once again and encountered a lot of resistance...so that made me nervous. I thought that perhaps I had lined up the screws on the bottom of the platter incorrectly with the spindle mechanism and perhaps jammed things up?
Also, how much noise is associated with the platter when it turns? I hear a bit of noise when I put my ear down to the spindle....like a tiny bit of scrapping?

I can not stress this enough this is no joke keep your bearings oiled.
The factory only puts enough oil for IMO a few hundred hours.

how do you go about oiling these bearings? Also would a regular 3 in 1 oil or a engine oil work?

What is the grade of oil used for the 1100/1200 spindle? I can't believe the formulation is something unique and the table will fail with anything else. It feels about the same as the bed gear oil used on my father's clock-making lathe. I don't know the grade offhand. The Technics stuff may be regular oil with a carbon or teflon additive to improve damping,

I would not recommend 3 in 1 or motor oil.
A couple of drops at the top of the spindle near the shaft.
I like put a drop and lift it up and take a q-tip hold it at the shaft and turn a couple of times to clean it then reapply the oil once more lift the shaft up and to help make it seep down.

Is there any special trick to installing the platter? The directions just say to place the turntable platter on the center spindle.
