the unofficial Record Store Day 2019 thread: Saturday April 13

The Past is Alive
Ok. So.

What are your plans for Record Store Day 2019, Saturday April 13th?

I will be visiting all four RSD locations in my beloved city, hang out and chat, people watch, etc., but probably not purchase anything RSD related.

I will not visit FYE.

I carry a stack of recently found dups under my arm, hang around town and swap with the other geezers that do the same. I buy nothing! My day is RTD, not RSD and I'm set on intent of swapping that disturbing S for store with a nice T for 'Tom'.

I plan to drop into a local store today but on RSD I'll be on an island where the only shop with records is a thrift store that's open 3 hours per week. I'm not taking my car over and it's almost an hour to walk there from our place so I don't think I'll be browsing the 2 or 3 boxes of mouldy oldies this time.

Cheap? I don't press crappy reissues in sub standardized ex-soviet plants and backyard mills and pretend it's 180g of gold instead of the cheapest fossil fuel based product ever invented. I don't sell shitty Chinese turntables for hundreds of dollars to the unsuspecting and I don't capitalize on the young and the stupid. Karma wise - they should support me. Screw the local LP dealer!

Since both my dad and I generally want things on RSD, I have a routine with my mom (my dad does not enjoy crowds, and it can be a bit chaotic). There are two record shops on opposite corners of an intersection in my town. I stand in line of the one that opens earlier and she stands in line of the other. I see what I can get from our lists and then call her so she knows not to get those. She sees if she can gets what is missing from the other store.

There are a number of things that caught my eye, but only a few that I feel like I really want to get. The Woody Guthrie, the Aretha Franklin 1967 singles, and the Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack (though that could be delayed, I doubt that that sound track will only be an RSD thing).

The local store I frequent more often doesn’t even sell equipment. They have a consignment booth that sells vintage, and does repairs, and will answer any question you have. His phone number is right there in the booth. I haven’t been in the other store’s permanent shop yet, so we’ll see.

As for pushing inferior reissues, that’s an Amazon thing more than a store thing. As with many diversions, a bit of research on the consumer end prevents a lot of problems. If a label or plant is putting out inferior product, the market knows, and quickly.

These days there's only one local store that I care to shop at, and I stop by when they have very little foot traffic. I support them, and shop there often. But never on RSD. Nothing I really want anyway this time around, and I definitely am too old to be waiting in lines and dealing with a crowd.

Hey, tell us how you REALLY feel about it.

I'm going and taking my son specifically to get the Weezer Teal album on vinyl. Weezer is one of his favorite bands. We've seen them together three times. Weezer was also my childhood nickname, given to me at birth by my two year old brother. I am the original Weezer, pre-dating the band by over 30 years.

My brother works at a record store, he dreads this upcoming Saturday like the plague. He calls the RSD offerings "Reproduced Collectability."

I plan on getting up at 5:30am, dress, eat breakfast, and drive to the closest participating RSD store. I plan on standing in line 1/2 hr. (doors open at 7). Only 1 album I'm interested in. Sadly to say, it's listed on Ebay already.

I went to one of my local stores today and was chatting with one of the co-owners. We agreed that RSD is overrated. Supporting your local record store? They are pretty much compelled to put the entire store on sale at 20 or 30 % off that day. Their usual margin? About 30%.

They also aren't going to have many of the releases in time for RSD either as the suppliers can't ship on time.

Yes, they will be busy and generate some cash flow but it's not a windfall.

I bought a full price $35 record.

I always hit RSD, It’s a good time to hit a very old and huge store, I have marked the Cheap Trick record and possibly the Def Lep B sides record, Maybe a clean used disc as well
:dunno:

My local record stores generally do not provide discounts on all of their stuff, so that is not as bad for them. I can see the nuisance of it though. I go and generally am close to the front of the line. I get one hurried pass and then I step away from the mob.

Same here. Though I'm in KY, I'm visiting grandkids in Algonquin, IL. I'll be visiting my favorite record store - Siren Records in McHenry.
