They're at it again! Re-imagining the Infinity Quantum 3.

Ron are you suggesting you may be panning another get-together? Should I started marinating the steaks yet?

And I'd hope they are up and running by then... if they aren't either Mike or me will have died a very violent death :boxing:
With any luck they should be functional within a week. We'll see.

Were are still a ways out from the date, but you might as well start working out a marinating plan :D

I'm sure you guys will have them ready to go by then. It sounds like they may be a touch lighter so it shouldn't be a be a killer getting them down here like the ball busting Zero 9's hopefully ;)

I'm shooting for more of a DIY and tube event this time so they will fit right in.

Sleeping arrangement have already been made for the both of you if your coming. :thmbsp:

I see you two are at it again ;)

Looking good Mike and Bob! I love the layup you did for the cab material. It's going to be interesting to see how it works out in that regard.

Might you have these ready for travel say,,, by May 22nd?

RC

Cool. I'll put in a time-off request for that weekend. You can also count on the Yaqin making an appearance, as well as the re-baffled IMF's.

And in all honestly I wouldn't use my cabinets as foundations for anything larger than a double wide :D

--Bobfalk

I remember loading those Zero 9's into your van.....I can assure you they could support more than a double wide  The stance the van took after the speakers were loaded was quite amusing......looked something like a frog..
(twice as high in the front as the rear)

Bomb proof comes to mind :thmbsp:

Excellent to hear Mike! I can't imagine the date changing because thats the weekend Kate and the girls are going to be in SD visiting her brother and sister-in-law. That means it will make for a late night of making noise and trying not to blow anything up ;)

Some more progress and pics. The baffle extension for the woofer was made today, and the panels were cut to their final size.

Additionally, the jig for the driver layout was made and so the cutouts should be finished tomorrow (save for the rear baffle).

Excellent work Mike and Bob! I love the look of router-manipulated wood. Matter of fact, if Bob is setup to turn out another pair of woofer extensions I'd be happy to pay a fair price for some. Mine are kinda ratty looking. Just a thought. :thmbsp:

We got the front baffles carved up today and aim for assembly tomorrow. Thanks to the jig rigged up by Bob, the mirror imaging went of without a hitch. Actually, the baffles are not completely carved up yet, as the woofer cutout still needs to be done, but that is relatively simple, in the grand scheme of things.

Jimreeves, I talked to Bob today about making another set and he's all for it. I told him to PM you about the particulars, but you might want to PM him as well, lest he forget. Also, you have to tell us how to remove it- that's the only reason that we made new ones, as we could not figure out how to remove the old ones without significantly damaging the original cabs or the extension.

Hi,

I'm brand new to this forum. I recently picked up four Quantum 3s - which need some repairs. One has a dead mid-dome, all have the "dirty pot" issue, one has a dead EMIT, etc.

I'd like to start repairing them. I've ordered a few replacement drivers from eBay. However, I have never repair a speaker before, and am not really very experienced with electronics - I do have a lot of questions, so I'll start slowly.

First,

I've found instructions for cleaning the pots on a QLSIII. However, I have no idea how to remove them. I've seen pictures of the entire crossover for sale on eBay, and it looks as though it were glued to the back of the inside cabinet. Can the pots be removed without taking the whole speaker apart and ripping out the crossover?

Second,

I want to replace/swap one of the EMIT tweeters. It's *soldered* to the wire that connects it. Am I supposed to disconnect it somewhere else inside the speaker, or should I desolder the connectors to replace it, or splice the wires?

Third,

what's a good not-to-expensive multimeter to start with.

Fourth,

what do you use to test drivers individually?

Sorry for so many newbie questions at once.

One recommendation would be to start a new thread in either the Speakers or Infinity section rather than dropping in on someone else's project. You'll get better results that way.

I have an older pair of black-face QLS-1's, which have the extensions glued to the front baffle. One appears original but the other is a hack job. Easily removed with a putty knife driven under the edges.
Thanks! I'll PM Bob.

Nope, but neither are the mid-domes, we've covered this in other threads though and I don't want to take this off topic. Check my posts.

But, while I was cooling off, I put in a call to Boy Wonder and asked how quickly he could whip up a set of new cabinets for the Quantum 3.

Today wood and glue were bought, and panels rough-cut for a modern take on the Quantum 3. They will be stronger, more inert, and mirror imaged. All the original drivers and design elements from the original will be maintained, including the dimensions and proportions, as well as drivers, crossover, and driver layout, although the set will be mirror imaged. Indeed, I believe it is the lack of mirroring that has lead to such poor soundstage in my room.

The cabinets will be constructed in a more ordinary manor- that is, without our typical (until now) finger jointing. However, the material used will be somewhat experimental. It is a laminate material of alternating layers of hardboard and flooring underlayment. Each layer is approximately 1/4" thick, with each panel being made of 5 layers (two of the flooring underlayment, three of the hardboard). The idea is to have the underlayment provide strength and dimensional stability (the two layers have their grain perpendicular to each other), while the hardboard provides high density mass and additional strength. This is a material Bob though up when I first started designing the Compacts (re-christened the Stripes), and we glued up some samples to play with. Indeed, it is an exceptionally strong material and should make a fine cabinet, but the proof will be in the pudding, as it's said. I will post a picture of the sample block some other time (when I find the battery for my camera), but I will say (in addition) that it looks pretty good to boot.

As usual, pics and updates to follow as time and events allow.

YOU GUYS ARE INSANE!!!

(Insanely ingenious!)

I love my JARVE/FALK made STRIPE speakers!

Pass the popcorn, Babbaloo. :lurk:

Boy Wonder's Watkins surround standoffs arrived, and they're awesome. You really need to move south towards dizzy-world Bob! Thanks so much!

How's the project coming Mike? Hope my side job didn't slow things down.

My quantums are gonna be so purdy!

Jim

The project is coming along still, we have pictures but Mike's camera is in my shop still. The 1st cab just needs the terminal hole and rear emit route and the other is half assembled. We've been slacking on the project due to Mike's car search but that's over now and Mike is the proud owner of a brand-in-noway-new Cadillac Deville.

Hopefully we will be able to test the cabs out and get some picts posted in the next couple days here... who knows.

Today, progress did not so much as leap forward, rather than stumbled drunkly in a roughly forwardish direction. In short, we took about 3 hours to accomplish half an hour worth of work.

Crossovers were removed from the old cabinet, and Bob made, more or less, a template for the rear EMIT cavity and crossover/terminal to route onto the new cabinet.

And I drilled the holes in the woofer rings for screws, after a few false starts- it's amazing that the holes on the original woofer ring and the new one do not line up, but both line up with the holes on the woofer. Laws of thermodynamics = broken.

Tomorrow we're shooting to have one of them more or less in a near-finished state so that we can compare/contrast with one of the originals and hear/see just how badly the worlds most expensive pair of used QLS-3's ended up.

Sounds like lubrication played a role here, hope it was enjoyable!

Thanks for the update, we'll await your analysis, perhaps lubrication will be in order there, too!
