I am aware that sometimes pressing plants mess up and put the wrong label on the wrong album so you get an album by Glen Campbell with Steve Miller Band labels on both sides and in a Steve Miller Band jacket. Seen that before, but this one has me stumped!

Pulled out an album by Neil Young, Life, released in 1987. Played side one and thought.....hmmmmm.....this is like no other Neil Young album I've ever heard but hey, Neil is known to be a bit strange at times and besides, I REALLY LIKE IT!!! Flipped it over and now, yeah, that sounds like Neil.

OK, so still curious as to what happened with side one, I put it back on and pull up Soundhound and it says Pat Metheny, Still Life(Talking), an album also released in 1987. So they (pressing plant) must have used the wrong stamper on side 1 and the correct stamper on side 2 even though the labels for both sides are the Neil Young album.

You would think that once they realized on side 1 that they had the incorrect stamper and replaced it with the correct one, that those pressings would have gone in the recycle bin, no? Or what?

Anyhow, just wondered if anyone had seen anything like this before where one side is correct but the other not? Like I said, I've seen the completely wrong album but not just one side.....strange isn't it?

i have an album with the wrong pressing on one side . had it for many years . apparently not worth anything .

weird you have to put that on discogs !!!Nashou

I think I will.....that's the first place I looked but did not find anything. Maybe I didn't dig deep enough though.....

I would think it's a rarity. Hang onto it.

That's what my buddy, The Record Man said and indicated that there were collectors out there that look for this kind of thing. I would like to have both albums, don't really care about hanging on to this one especially if it turns out to be valuable.

Hey pete, have you looked into it? You might be surprised but it also all depends on the album, artist etc. etc.

I have a Folks Singer pressing with the labels swapped for the wrong sides, but it's a reissue and I don't think it's worth anything. It pisses me off more than anything. Like how sloppy could those guys get? A Neil Young 1987 original pressed with the wrong stamper... That could be worth something - to someone. Not to me though.

PS - I just noticed that it is also Columbia Record Club release.....also from 1987.

I have a copy of David Bowie (can't recall which ATM) that has Kansas on one side and Bowie on the other. All labels are for Bowie

Tom, I've seen that fairly often, Side 1 is actually Side 2 or vice versa, but not two completely different artists on the same disc.....yeah, not to me either because like I said, I want both albums now complete.....the Metheny is the real deal!

Tiver, yes, that sounds exactly like what happened in my case, and even the dead wax shows the correct information....does yours? IOW, do both deadwax inscriptions have the Bowie markings?

That is totally cool, it could really mess with your mind at parties. I have a 2 record set that has side 1 and 4 and side 3 and 3 but the music is correct though.

I have a pressing of Genesis "Foxtrot" with side one pressed on both sides. I mean, at least it's the same album, but the first time I played it and turned over to Side 2, I thought, "Boy, this sounds awfully familiar..."

I have a copy of The Isaac Hayes Movement where side 1 is Orson Welles War of the Worlds, talk about a strange one.

I will have to dig it out and see. I never really thought about the dead wax. To have the wrong ID on that seems strange, but if somehow a stamper was produced from the wrong mother, it could have been marked without the knowledge it was wrong. What's a stamper good for? 2500 presses? I have read the lifespan somewhere but I don't really remember. Still, the stamper could have been run to its limit and some (if not all) of the records from it could have gone out to market.

And the Pat Metheny is good. That would be ECM label.

I've read that about 1,000 pressings from a stamper (father) disc is pushing the limit, but also that many more than that sometimes get stamped which results in less-than-optimal sound in many cases as companies try to "milk the last drop" out of them.
