Hello Augy,

Yes, they are nice indeed, don't know about the Mother of All, but I know I'll never part with mine. BTW, very few of those around, as only 200 were ever produced.

Hey bastek,

No, not by any means, as the Vizio’s replaced TOTL Sony’s throughout the house, but you cannot beat getting two for the price of one. It was the wife’s idea since she asked if it wouldn’t be better with two full size screens to watch games, over one with PIP. Needless to say, I did not argue with her reasoning.

I have never had the opportunity to listen to the 30/31 series combo, but I am sure it was outstanding. I believe the updated 30.5 used two 20 BIT UltraAnalog D20400A DAC’s while it’s successor, the 30.6 used four 24 BIT PCM1704’s. The Nakamichi also utilizes the famed Burr-Brown 1704’s, specifically four PCM1704U-J’s. I would imagine that both soundstage and clarity are similar.

They still are in good company as older as well as many current offerings still utilize those DAC’s, Burmester 001, KRELL KPS 28c, ML No. 39/360S, Naim CD555, Simaudio Moon Evolution Andromeda, Teac Esoteric D-01 to name a few.

BTW, the Nakamichi 1000mb in the center of my photo was referenced to in the June 1993 Stereophile review of the No. 31 Transport.

Yep, the Nak defiantly weighs less than the Abbingdon. Nice to see they are using another famed chipset from the past, the Philips 16 BIT TDA1541A. Guess we could revive the which is better in the Bitstream/Multibit format. I bet the NOS DAC/Valve combination would be something to hear!

This thread just reaffirms my belief that just because a component utilizes the latest technology, does not necessarily mean that is has better performance.

BTW, thanks glum & buffdaddy for having my back on the Vizio's! :thmbsp:

I am sure the ML and Nak are both breathtaking. My mention of the ML was not meant to slight your setup. I just thought it had to be mentioned because it is the most visually overwhelming/over the top CDP I have seen. Like your Nak it has three boxes, but the PS is huge and there are 3 cables just to connect it to the transport. Add the PS AC cord, the one for the DAC, the DAC connection to the transport and the fact that the DAC alone looks like a miniature (OK, not so minuature) futuristic building, the transport with its massive power lid and you end up with something that has to be seen to be appreciated.

Your Dragon may well be more advanced and more like the upgraded ML's that came along after my time. All I know is the 30/31 sounded amazing and Beemer is mighty lucky to have the later versions of those beauties. After I left the business I did not make an effort to keep up with the latest and greatest, a wise plan when you no longer have access to that stuff at dealer cost or better and a never ending supply of customers willing to buy your castoffs at no loss. Though I am not saying it is as good, the only machine I have here that has had the same WOW effect on me is the Stax Quattro II I just acquired. Interestingly, it uses a Sanyo transport like the Dragon, not sure which one though.

The TDS1541A was a good chip. My Mission PCMII uses them, but the Stax kills it with its PCM56P's however. Looks like Stax used the PCM1702 in a later DAC. That might be worth a listen!

My friend sells and installs Vizio in NY, and although the picture is good, they have a 10-15% failure rate in the first few months. You can't beat the price for sure, but the trouble to uninstall it, pack it and send it back for a replacement is too much even under warranty.
 
Mine lasted just shy of 2 years. Now the panny that replaced it sucks worse.
 
I think most would look at that pic with all that great gear and say "well its music first"......atleast thats what I thought, hell my rig would sadly add up to over $25k MSRP and I payed under $600 used for my Projector thanks to help from a kind friend but still the picture isnt the point...........atleast not for me (to my potential humiliation I think my pro looks great though).
Vizio units dont look bad and have a pretty strong price point, BTW I listed that AMR just cause its overkill, heard it and liked it but its still overkill!

The AMR is what opened my eyes up to CD players. Unfortunately the price was a deal killer for me.
 
When I first looked at the pic, my first reaction was "Why does he have all his gear on the kitchen counter". For some reason when taking a quick glance, I thought I was looking at stainless appliances. :D

The AMR resale value crashed so maybe someday........a guy can dream right?
