Thorens TD-145

Thorens TD-145 ?

I picked-up a Thorens TD-145 2 weeks ago for $200. Needed a Armrest holder $25..The unit was service last year for a New motor.

Now, I installed a New RCA Silver cable, Silver Plated Cart to Headshell wires.

From the pictures the plastic seems very very lightly lubed.
So the ?...Should this be lubed as the Service Manual does not state this?

I'd guess yes. Clean the old lube first. I'm not sure what would be the best to lube it with though. Hopefully a more experienced person will chime in. If I was to have a guess, I'd say silicone grease.

Since I'm not more experienced than bhundu, I'll retract what I've said.
I always though that lubing plastic was not necessary, but I could be wrong.
Silicone though, makes a lot of sense, you could certainly try it.

Maybe it's an optical illusion, but the azimuth of the head shell seems way off. If the pic shows the real angle you need to correct it. On that arm, you will need to ask others about how to do it.

It does look a bit off now you point it out. Worth the owner having a closer look and perhaps checking the level of the top of the headshell against the pre-checked level of the plinth and platter.

Well Well. Good eyes...Looking at the cart from the back...What do you see?

Seem's to be a-bit off?:scratch2:

Now..Not sure how to adjust this..

Check the manual (available in vinylengine.com) Tonearm is the same as the 160. On the later versions (mark II) it says they are press fitted and can be rotated to be flat - it appears that the earlier version is press fitted also, so it may be simply a matter of rotating the connector. (They recommend using a mirror to check the azimuth of the cartridge at the record surface)

Here is the back. I carefully tried to move...No Go..

OK..I was able to move the connector from the Headshell.
Now it's lined up...:banana: Thanks for another set of eyes guys!!!

So..Since the TT was purchased last month..the needle has around 80hrs..
?...Should I order a New styli for the Sumiko Black Pearl since there maybe un-even
wear...Or go this route...

Replace Sumiko Black Pearl styli

If you grease (and I would, lightly), insure that the grease is good for plastic (read the label). There are some greases that will have various petrochem distillates in them that are not good for plastic.

Would guess that 80hr is not a wear problem. However, you will be able to judge quite quickly as once it is aligned properly, if worn badly, it will cut the vinyl and leave a ball of brown fuzz on the stylus after playing an LP if badly worn.

Well done! The second headshell that you just bought will come in handy.

(A little tip that I use for taking off/putting back on the headshell: Hold the tonearm tube in your left hand while tightening/loosening the collar with the right hand. Slight opposing force with the left hand helps prevent any unwanted twisting)

Have a close look at the cantilever on your Sumiko. Hopefully it's still straight. Sometimes the cantilever will be favouring a lean towards one side if it's been running at an incorrect azmith.

As the previous poster said look for the dreaded vinyl shavings. Another test would be to listen to a mono record in stereo with headphones for even volume and clarity on left and right channels.

Just order the Saunders today...In the mean time I am going to pop in the M97xE

I've done both those Shures and one or two others on my 145. They're all pretty nice. What floored me was putting a MC on it. If you ever get an opportunity, it takes it to a whole different world. Hate to compare to a CDP, but as much of a noticeable difference as with or without a DAC.

Hey have you dealt with your VTA at all? It's kind of a PITA to reach but it's another adjustment I've found made a huge difference in that table. Along with hitting those null points.

?..Should the Dynamic Stabilizer be used?

Till then...I am getting some sleep..Will demo this tonight pending my ?.

The arm on the TD145 will work with a nice Hi end moving coil like a Denon DL301mkII they can be had for $180 from cometsupply.com
