Something I wonder about sometimes here at AK is why some threads are so popular and why some basically just get ignored.

No offence to the thread starters, but some threads about knobs or the latest "scroe" found on the curb go on for pages and pages.

And other audio/music/enjoyment based threads are just ignored.

Does it depend on who starts a thread?

I almost never even look at who started a thread, or who posts what, unless they are acting like an ass, then I look and see who it is :)

It's not about popularity of a person, it's about how the thread can relate to more people.

If you start a thread on a new $10,000 amp and ask the site members what preamp you should get to match it in the $10,000 range, they will not know or have a comment. You might get a few comments but not a huge amount and the thread will die.

If you start a thread and say you just got some Advents for $50 at the goodwill and you now need help to get a amp to match them, the site will have all the answers. This will run for pages and pages.

Some thread popularity is more about socioeconomics than anything else.

Other slow or dead threads are from lack of knowledge for anything rare or advanced know how.

I think for many members AK is the first stop for a beginner and they generally find it in researching some used equipment they bought or want to buy. Anything to do with this level and reference point will be a busy topic on the site.
 
Some threads just grow legs and take off and not usually in the direction it initially started.
On tangents no one could even imagine or expect from an innocuous comment or query.
No rhyme or reason

It's tribalism. A genetic throwback for safety and survival.
Same thing as gathering together in the cave while others roamed the plains.
Only now safety and survival aren't usually the motivator. It's because you like fart jokes, or think Bose sucks, or don't like peas in your guac.

What a perfectly good way to ruin peas.
 
I don't think there are members who are more "popular" than others. There are those who are more prolific with their posts than others, along with those who are knowledgeable in one particular facet of our hobby. I do know there's plenty of gregarious AKers who spread good cheer liberally...some of those who are no longer with us...Muelster7 comes immediately to mind in that regard:(

It all boils down to topic..some topics attract responses like ants to honey:)...others get limited response. But...it's all good. Except for threads on high-buck power cables:)
