That is a great collection of images - thank you for the link. I have encountered Mr. O'Sullivan's work previously when looking through the National Archives and Library of Congress' Civil War photography collections - by hand with ill-fitting white cotton gloves back then. Much of his work has been digitized now and is easily accessed online.

Almost exactly 150 years ago Mr. O'Sullivan was roaming around Northern Virginia, traipsing over the site of the Union's first major defeat along the banks of the Bull Run.

Though Mr. O'Sullivan's talent as a photographer is abundantly evident in his later work Out West, I have always thought his contemporary, Andrew J. Russell had the edge as a technician during the Civil War. It is interesting how both men wound up Out West immediately after the Civil War taking photographs that would become iconic American images. It would be interesting to trace their paths throughout the late 1860's to see who went where when. They were certainly tripping over each other as they attempted to following the scene of action here in the East during the early 1860's.
