Tiny Cables Inside the Amp

I was thinking of using some thicker speaker cables (up to 12 or 14 awg) to get better sound, but when I opened up my vintage receiver (Sansui 7070), what I saw were 4 very tiny cables feeding the speaker A and B terminals (top left corner). Would it be futile to use speakers cables that are thicker than that?

Won't hurt, but don't expect miraculous results. ymmv, of course.

Its a distance thing. The run of wires inside the amp is less than a foot, so the resistance of that small wire is insignificant. Unless your speakers are right under the amp, you'll be using a longer run of wire.

That said you don't need insanely fat wire. More than 14 awg is probably pointless unless its really long and a whole lot of power. Or unless the wire is free.

There is ZERO reason to use super thick cable UNLESS one is using very long cable runs with low ohm speakers pumping huge amount of watts.

Dont let anyone tell you that you need anything more than the above. I use 16awg for my front system 4 ft runs and THAT is overkill.

The wires in your speakers from binding posts to crossovers, and crossover-to-drivers is most likely similar.

Besides "tiny" wires inside the unit the "very tiny" contact patch of the protection relays amaze me. When I bought a large Advent speaker years ago the instructions recommended ordinary lamp cord. That is all I have ever used since.

This stuff was all designed by people who really knew/know electrical theory and the application thereof, not by audiophiles.

Giant wires are serious over-kill. You only need them if you are putting your speaker 100 ft or more away from your amp.

Doesn't keep people from wanting them though. I've used lamp cord for 40 years with no trouble, and didn't really notice a difference between the four conductor telephone wire my Dad used in 1974 and the 12 gauge I put in because I got it cheap.

Just use the biggest speaker cable your gear will accept.

With your sansui 7070, that's going to be 16 gauge.

If your gear won't accept bigger, no point in thinking about it.

The gauge used for the internal wiring of the 7070 is adequate. The short lengths tell us that.
