'Tis the Season... for Christmas Vinyls!

You can only play these for maybe a month a year... so you've got cash in and play them when you can.

I bought Elvis' Blue Christmas over the summer, my mom used to have this one when we were kids and I guess I was feeling a little nostalgic. I just put some lights up outdoors and am finally feeling "Christmasy" so I decided to give it a spin and it's sounding great!

I also have a readers digest 5 disc set that I played a little last year... although nothing on there really stood out for me... I'll have to give it another chance this year.

What are some of your favourite Christmas albums?

I grew up listening to the Chipmonks Christmas albums. I have secured these albums (Vol. 1 & 2) and play them every Christmas, along with Disney's "The Sounds Of Christmas".
Warm, fuzzy childhood Christmas memories.:thmbsp:

Edit: Also! The Ventures Christmas album too!
 
G'day all, Christmas records are an interesting case, as it just doesn't feel right to play them at any other time but the Christmas season, so all mine are getting quite a play at the moment.

I've obtained quite a few good compilations from charity stores and the like. Although not really Christmas music, Handel's 'Messiah' tends to get played quite a bit during the Christmas season too. :yes: :music: Regards, Felix aka catman.

I like "Ella (Fitzgerald) Wishes you a Swinging Christmas"
The Alligator Records Christmas Collection, and
Rockin' Little Christmas to help offset the sometimes over-played traditional recordings.
 
i particularly like to collect jazz xmas albums for the variety. having heard all the traditional albums for so many decades, i try to avoid the repetitious playing of the old favorites.

crescent city christmas card by wynton marsalis has a great verson of 'twas the night before xmas'.

i also got a remix album of some tunes used in the movie 'the santa clause'. the art of noise does the music and it is fantastic.

my kids have always nagged me not to play xmas albums duing the summer or whenever i got them but they had to be heard for quality AND i dont mind one bit. it amuses me when they start the whining.

anyway, over the years i have acquired quite a few non standard/traditional xmas discs, vinyl and otherwise. the paul horn 'the peace album' is a nice one for instance and the old columbia release 'jingle bell jazz' which has the tune 'blue xmas' by bob dorough, which was commissioned by miles davis. i will have to find some of these this week.

I found a minty copy of 1981's "God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen" this past summer at a Goodwill and finally gave it a spin a coupla weeks ago. Besides being appropriate for the season, it also contains some mighty fine jazz from some big names.

Another excellent collection, if you can find a copy, is "Mr. Santa's Boogie" on Savoy, which contains fun 1940s-50s R&B and jazz, including Charlie Parker's bop arrangement of "White Christmas":

I've been away from AK for awhile. Is there a forum rule about the use of the word 'vinyls'? Like fingernails on a chalkboard, it is. LP, record, album, even 'platter' I can live with. Vinyls?
