To the Technics bashers...

Technics

I have an SA 425. I don't know where I picked it up along the way, and I don't know if it's any good, but it sounds good to me. I'm giving it away with some Advents to my niece and her husband.

Who's bashing Technics..? :dunno: I like all equipment...Sooner or later it breaks and needs to be fixed:deal:

I've certainly heard some Technics bashing before, notably from a certain elite forum that has a rather large following in the audio video realm. My first receiver ever was the SA-5170 and I bought their components right up until the company stopped releasing new models. I've had about everything but one of their turntables oddly enough; CD carousels, tape decks and graphic equalizers. I will also agree that they tried to do too much, and having their equipment sitting alongside the lower priced Panasonic components was kind of strange. For me it was a 'poor man's' type of line, and I CERTAINLY mean no disrespect considering I spent thousands on their stuff over the decades. In my teenage and early 20's world, if you had lots of cash you bought Sansui, Pioneer, Kenwood or Marantz.... the Technics seemed be the less expensive hi-fi value at the time.

I believe I wound up having 5 Technics receivers altogether, and still have the SA-500 and the SA-G0913, though neither are being used these days. I will say I didn't much care for the 80's slide control component ascetics; but then I think lots of companies were changing their styling in the 80's to what was then regarded as looking more 'modern'. I had one of those I lost in a divorce....I got the better end of the bargain by seeing it and the ex-wife gone ;). I have to agree with others about one thing; when they dropped the 'By Panasonic' moniker their build quality seemed to go downhill, notably the 80's stuff. My last Technics, the SA-DX940, was a beast - lots of power, but it seemed to have a thin sound in the midrange, so I finally bought my first Pioneer for my home theater setup. My second receiver, the SA-500 is in storage but I plan to give it a thorough cleaning soon. I've kind of made up my mind to find myself one of the really old pieces either in the SA-xx70 or SA-xx60 lineup just to have as a kind of homage to my first receiver :).

I recently got a Technics SU-V85A, beautiful sound. The SU-G50 is also nice sounding so i like the Class AA and New Class A Technics amps. The Technics P350 CD player was a surprise, very nice sound. I love my SL-5210 Turntable.. I think Technics made some great stuff xD :)

I never really "bashed" Technics, just never took them serious. Back in the day I bought Marantz (2230) in 1975 my buddies bought Sansui and Yamaha, today I own 6 Marantz recievers, 3 Sansui recievers, 3 Kenwood amps, 2 Sansui amps annddd I finally bought a Technics SA-700 and I have another "donor" unit on the way also have bought 2 sets of output transistors for it (I am afraid of it dieing) I am truely blown away by the sound of this reciever, I thought my Marantz was "it" for a reciever and I still love listening to ALL of them, but I have to admit I prefer the sound of my Technics SA-700 over everything except MAYBE my Marantz Model 22 and my Kenny KA-6006. I AM serching for an SA-1000.

The New Class A stuff from late 80s early 90s are very underated. I bought an SA-GX303 back in the day and was very happy. Anyone who ever heard this receiver always did a doubletake. For a Black Box...I thought they looked really nice too. Afterwards, I bought an SA-GX505 and an SA-GX710 and these units can really pump out the wattage. I use them on 4 ohm speaker loads and they simply never clip. Rich warm sound too. These units have a pretty versatile parametric EQ built in to boot. They were among the last to be made in Japan.

Really old thread brought back to life. I guess I haven't heard much from the Technics bashers here on AK. Like any brand, there is good stuff and bad stuff. We'd all like to find a mint SA-1000, but in the meantime, my SA-1010 does the job for me. With 120 wpc, it's not the most powerful receiver I've owned, but IMHO, it's the best sounding. It has more buttons, lights, and features than anyone needs. Class A runs very warm, but the sound is worth it. The "Space Dimension" feature is pretty darn cool, also. Most of my Technics gear is just under 17" wide, and this thing is about 21" wide, so it really sticks out.

I also love Technics EQ's, cassette decks, and their direct drive turntables. The best bang for the buck, and very reliable in my experience.

Hi Rob, yeah the Turntables are awesome the one i have with its Nagaoka cartridge is so clear:music::banana: mm yes hte massive SA-1000

I've owned a few brands over the years, Technics being one.....with no complaints. I pickup a SA-5370 a few months ago off CL for $25. The guy selling was the original owner and took very good care of it...not a scratch on it. It's rated at a modest 48 watts @ 8ohms, which I suspect is on the conservative side. It's a nice receiver with good sound.

I'm picking up a intergrated amp (SU-8088) today...which I hope is in as good of shape as the SA-5370. This amp will be part of an all Technics system for the office. Eventually, I'd like to add one of the following, SA-800,SA-1000 or SA-5770 one day.:naughty:

Technics Su-V8

Don't forget the Su-V8 with the New Class A with Synchronus bias .
I'm using one now and it is one of those amps you can listen to for hours and not have listeners fatigue.
It has two seperate power supplies and is built like a tank.
To me this was an Sleeper Amp and never got the recognition it deserved.
I've noticed a few on Ebay lately selling very low prices.(tempted to buy one)
It also had a very decent phono section.
If you have a chance get one and I don't think you will be dissapointed.
Also the preamp SU-9600P wasn't a slouch.
And yes I am a Yamaha fan too.

The only Technics gear I dislike are the smallish receivers with the one-chip output. Cheesy, costcutting design.

Hey, didn't know Styx was back!

no sense in bashing brands. any japanese mfg is /was capable of creating brilliant
designs when they got the balls to put them out . they lose money on those
endeavors, though , because they can't sell enough to justify production costs.
if they only sell 2 or 3 140wpc receivers for every 40 or 50 40/50wpc units , they
likely stick/stuck with what sells and makes more money.

sanyo sharp mitsubishi panasonic sears jcpenny radioshack, were capable of
making/procuring great stuff.... it's just that most of what we know of are more bpc turd
than gem.

Picked up the SU-8088 this afternoon.....needed a good cleaning but seem to be in good shape. The da@* thing weights a ton.....and has some considerable power.:D

You think Technics are bad for being bashed? Some boards you mention Radio Shack, Realistic, or Optimus and you might as well tuck your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye!

You got THAT right! Makes me feel like a minority.

I picked up a Technics ST-7600 Tuner and a SU-7100 amp from ebay while my Marantz 4230 Quad was being revamped by Vintage Audio and was amazed at how much better the quality was. When I got the 4230 back I was very disapointed at the lack of depth and warmth compared to the Technics. I'm going to sell the Marantz and (2) JVC CD-4's if anyone is interested.
P.s. Hey Craig, if we went above 4 on the volume our wives would leave us. Hum, food for thought.

My first receiver was a Technics SA-5170 and it was great for what it was, but it was a 25 watt receiver.....I do plan on buying another xx70 receiver, but want to find one with more power. It had a nice look to it, understated but lovely to my eyes.

My second receiver was the Technics SA-500 and I definitely intend to own another one of those or higher from that series. Great to look at and great to listen to.

Past that I don't intend to buy any other receivers from the Technics line; I've owned plenty past that just by upgrading over the decades. The 80's were indeed bad hair days for Technics in my eyes; I didn't much care for the appearance then nor do I now, even though I owned a few. The 90's and past Technics receivers looked okay but they do have a bpc look to them, too. Not that I refuse to own one - if I come across one for dirt cheap I'll pick it up, but I won't be searching those out like I will the seventies models.

80wpc, 4 x 15,000uF caps, potted transformer. I've got one in my livingroom right now and might never sell it. I found mine at the dump... filthy but otherwise in perfect working order.

I have all technics equipment ( about 19 years old now) apart from the cd recorder and the speakers. My amp. is the suvx700 , and it is a MONSTER!! 100 watts easily a channel when required, and electronically still very quiet and nice sounding, with a LOT of hours under its belt.......... .....ianj
