Today's Bluegrass Playlist

I have been listening to WAMU Washington, DC on their HD2 Stream "BLUEGRASS COUNTRY". Excellent stream (IMO) with live DJs and very good Bluegrass playlists. The live DJs are the most important thing to me because unlike Jazz that I am well versed in, Bluegrass is still a steep learning curve for me, so I need someone to talk about the music that I am listening to. One of their shows, "Music From Foggy Hollow" with Mike Kear, has been especially helpful and entertaining. The show originates from Australia, but is broadcast on US stations like WAMU. I emailed Mike and he kindly responded. He is a genuinely nice person with a fun personality for broadcasting. He is very well versed in new contemporary Bluegrass artists and bands, and breaks up his show with some good discussion and a few jokes. It is simply good entertainment.

I've been searching for decent FM (Terrestrial) Bluegrass staitons to stream, along with subscription service and free Bluegrass playlist streams. I am primarily a Jazz aficionado, but that's why I like Bluegrass. because I regard Bluegrass as "Country Jazz". Some Jazz standards are actually covered by some Bluegrass artists, that I appricate. But you can hear Pop/Rock in Bluegrass, like The Chicks covering the Fleetwood Mack song "Landslide" in a Bluegrass style. Today, I actually heard a Bluegrass band covering Freddy Mercury and Queen's hit "Bohemian Rhapsody".

So far I have been listening to WDVX (Knoxville) and their shows like "Bluegrass Speical", Bluegrass Country 88.5 Washington, DC, and 181,FM Front Porch Bluegrass station. I prefer a live DJ station so I can learn about the artists and the music, as long as the DJ is interactive. Bluegrass Country seems to have excellent DJs that provide background about the artists and music they are playing. I have just started this streaming journey for Bluegrass, so I am sure there are more than I have listed.

For subscription, I have Apple Music, but I also have LiveXone (formerly Slacker Radio) and they have an excellent Bluegrass Streaming station LiveXone Bluegrass, albeit with no live DJ. But they do interject artists talking about their music at times, just before they play the artist selection that was just talking.

I can heartily recommend Sirius/XM for their dedicated stations and dj’s. Both their jazz and bluegrass stations are very good. They also have a station dedicated to Americana. And sxm is not just for streaming in your vehicle; you can also stream via their app to your phone / tablet / streamer. Quality is very acceptable. If you ask, they will usually give you a deal. I have been paying less than $10 / month for car and internet streaming…

There are some really good and interesting Contemporary Bluegrass artists that I have been enjoying. Molly Tuttle, The Henhouse Prowlers, and Balsam Range just to name three. Bluegrass Country Radio is a fantastic stream/station to listen to for play of old adn new Bluegrass artists.

Speaking of Molly Tuttle, she did "White Freight Liner Blues" in colaboration with the great Tommy Emmanual and it's an amazing cut showcasing both vocals and pickin'. How could pickin' with Tommy Emmanuel be bad? But Molly sure holds her own here:



The Henhouse Prowlers have a fairly new cut "Lead and Iron" that is both beautiful and haunting, given the subject matter;



And to round out the three bands/artists that I pointed out, here is Balsam Range with "What the Years Do". This one hits home for me;

 
I am not a fan of standard Country music per se. I don't dislike it, but I'd not go out of my way to listen to Country music. So I never paid much attention to Dierks Bentley, since he's primarily listed as a Country artist. I didn't know until yesterday that he did a Bluegrass album. And it's pretty darn good!

I have been busy hunting some Bluegrass Vinyl during the last month. Not as easy as finding my standard Jazz Albums, but worth the hunt. This is what I have captured so far;
