My brother recorded that demo, at Intermedia Sound. He used to handle their sound at gigs as well. I met them at a gig at Tony C's in Nahant while they were still Cap'n Swing. Unfortunately he wasn't able to hitch his wagon to their star...The Cars were formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1976. Emerging from the local club scene, including performances at the Rathskeller ("the Rat") in Kenmore Square, the band quickly gained popularity before releasing their hit debut album in 1978.
Key details about their Boston origin:
Original Lineup: Ric Ocasek (rhythm guitar, vocals), Benjamin Orr (bass, vocals), Elliot Easton (lead guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards), and David Robinson (drums).
Precursor Band: Ocasek and Orr were previously in a Boston-based band called Cap'n Swing.
Breakthrough: They sent a demo of "Just What I Needed" to Boston radio station WBCN, where it became a heavily requested track.
Signature Sound: The band blended 1970s guitar-oriented rock with synthesizer-pop, establishing themselves as key figures in the late-70s new wave movement.

The Cars – Just What I Needed (1978)
Here’s an interesting video telling the story of how The Cars came to be. Elliot Easton also explains how he started playing guitar left-handed.
