Yeah, well, in 1989 alone you have the formation of Matador, Merge, and Slumberland Records, and before that Sub Pop, K, and SST. So even if some of the bands mentioned here are 20 or 30 years old, it seems natural to me that an indie playlist would reach back that far.

Exactly. At this point "indie" music is to me what classic rock is for many of the 50 year old posters on this board. It's the music I grew up with.

If I don't listen to/post the latest stuff that Pitchfork is drooling over it's because:


  1. As a 36 year old dude who was not that hip to begin with I don't care all that much about keeping up.
  2. I don't have the space or disposable income to buy a lot of records, so lately I have been listening to a lot of stuff I already have - most of which I really like or I would not have held on to it.
  3. A lot of it is crap.

Guys, I was just referring to the OPs statement about this being a thread for new music, not trying to discuss what "indie" means or insinuate that you are old and out of touch. I spend most of my time listening to post-punk and underground pop circa 1970-89. Most of the (brand) new music I listen to is experimental psych stuff that Pitchfork has never heard of because they are full of crap. Okay? Okay.
