Today's JAZZ playlist

This is the fifth of five volumes, I would love to find 1-4 to make a set. Recorded in 1947, soundin' mighty fine.

These really great LPs are of a slice of Duke's late 40s band. They were released on London (UK) and Hindsight (US). They were helmed by Jack Tower, who's first taping gig and as an amateur was Duke's Fargo recording. I have both the LPs and CD box set. I bought the CD set and thought it was just some bootlegs and then I got them and drilled down on their quality. I've got all five and they are a recommend for a good Ellington collection.

These are superb Hodges recordings from the first part of Johnny Hodges first years running his own ork. He left Duke on account of money and billing. He was out of the Ellington org some 5-6 (?) years. He made great recordings, but it was that time when running a band was very rough because of changing music tastes. Duke stayed afloat (albeit struggling) due to his royalties that propped up the band and his entourage. JH didn't have that kind of backing. Granz signed him immediately and long term to Verve and JH continued to pump out records. I've got the German reissued and you've the Japanese version. Both are sublime.
