I'm pretty much all Art Pepper, all the time right now and - to narrow it down further - yesterday I obsessed over his unaccompanied "Over The Rainbow."
I haven't done this in a long while, listened to one person basically to the exclusion of everybody else for weeks at a time.

This is but one volume of the massive Time-Life "mail order only" Big Band series of a couple of decades ago which covered all the early greats, and if you can get your hands on one of these Artie Shaw editions at the price being shown, go for it. Fast while they last.
The sound reproduction is just excellent and in the fold-out insert you get 2 1/2 pages on his career and another 2 1/2 pages providing comments on each of the recordings included by the noted jazz cornetist Richard M. (Dick) Sudhalter. Also, there is a complete discography of the contents, including musicians involved, which range from 1938 to 1941.
As with the Glen Gray entry in the series, the producers of this volume and Encore Artie Shaw chose to include an unusual number of previously-unreleased selections and non-hits. Puzzling considering that Artie had posted54 hits from 1936 to 1952!

Really great record, sounds nice too. Part of the Decca Jazz Heritage Series. I picked this up yesterday along with Chick Webb: A Legend Volume One (1929-1936) that is part of the same series. Both copies are in excellent condition. I'll be on the lookout for more from this Decca series.

No other musician shaped and defined jazz quite like Louis Armstrong. Contrary to the inscription on Jelly Roll Morton's business cards, if anybody was the father of jazz, Armstrong was. ON THE ROAD is the perfect introduction to this inimitable band leader and trumpet icon. A collection of Pops Armstrong's biggest hits, including "Mack the Knife," "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and "C'est Si Bon," among others, this CD gives listeners a chance to hear this jazz legend really roar.Armstrong sings on many of these numbers, and of course plays the trumpet with great verve and precision. ON THE ROAD is a live concert probably recorded sometime in the early '60s--unfortunately, the CD's packaging doesn't indicate exactly when or where. Nonetheless, the stereo fidelity of this recording adds to the music's clarity, making Satchmo and his All Stars really sparkle. An extremely enjoyable, stimulating listen.

Two greats for sure. I don't have much Artie Shaw for some reason. I'll need to fix that. I believe I saw a used copy of On The Road at the record store yesterday. I plan on going again today and will pick that up if it's still available.

Grammy Award winner and international drum star Ignacio Berroa has been recognized by many as one of the greatest drummers of our times. His numerous contributions to the American music scene have earned him a place among a very selective group of artists known to have set new musical trends for the 20th century.
Jazz Legend Dizzy Gillespie best defined Ignacio as:
...The only Latin drummer in the world, in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds; his native Afro-Cuban music as well as Jazz...
Ignacio Berroa was born in Havana Cuba on July 8,1953. Following his father's footsteps he began his musical education as a classical violinist.
He studied at the National School of Arts and subsequently at Havana's National Conservatory, beginning his professional career in 1970. By 1975 Ignacio Berroa had become Cuba's most sought after drummer.
After moving to New York in 1980 Ignacio met and had the privilege of working with musicians of the stature of Mario Bauza, among others. It was Mario who introduced him to the late Bebop master Dizzy Gillespie.
In August 1981 Dizzy officially invited Ignacio to join his quartet. Later he would also become an integral part of all the important bands Gillespie assembled during that decade, such as The Dizzy Gillespie's 70th Anniversary Big Band&, Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band& and the Grammy Award winner & United Nations Orchestra.
Ignacio has also conducted clinics and master classes all over the world and has recorded and played with musicians of the stature of McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton Marsalis, Jackie Mc Lean, Clark Terry, James Moody, Milt Jackson, Ron Carter, Charlie Haden, Eddie Gomez, Phil Woods, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Jon Faddis, Jack Bruce, Jaco Pastorius, Tito Puente, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lalo Schifrin, Chico Bouarque, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Lenny Andrade, Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco, Slide Hampton's Jazz Masters Big Band, Carnegie Hall Big Band, Lincoln Center Orchestra, WDR Big Band and BBC Big Band, just to name a few.
