Psych folk is a favorite of mine.
One of my favorite bands that I keep coming back to is Six Organs of Admittance (Ben Chasny).
They really don't have a bad album, and they sound especially great on vinyl. Not so big on Comets On Fire, but Six Organs always satisfies.
If we're talking 60's psych folk, I would have to go with John Fahey. Again, I don't own a bad Fahey record.

Jack Rose
Richard Bishop
Roy Montgomery

All superb examples. Man, I dig Jack Rose. Loved getting the opportunity to see him perform live. Good thing I did when I did, for he'd be dead w/in a year or two.

It's hard to categorize these guys but psych folk is as good a genre as any.
The Supreme Dicks are one of those head scratchers that I always come back to. Their music inhabits a realm somewhere between chaos and good natured deprecation. It's hard to tell where the depression ends and the bi-polar begins. Now that's real psych music! Each song seems so fragile, like it's coming apart at the seams, but they keep picking at the string. There's a shakiness to the music that I adore. Like watching a baby learn to walk through an obstacle course. The songs always seems to pull their selves together after a couple of minutes and can really be compelling with their guitar interplay and odd sound effects. The vocals are rather unsure and mumbled but usually emotional. It takes real guts to put yourself out there like they do and they do it with such conviction despite of their selves.There hasn't been a new Supreme Dicks record since '96 but what little is out there is worth seeking out for the adventurous.
