Today's score. Canton Quinto 540 w/pics

Electronics Junkie. Looking for a fix
Hey all. So I tried to not buy anymore speakers, but well ya know. :dunno:

So I'm perusing Craigys List O'goodies. And I spy these speakers I've never heard of. Look them up. Seem very nice. Email dude. Get back a cryptic response. Thought nah, not in the mood for CL weirdos today. But then I thought hmm maybe just not a native speaker. And thankfully this was the case.

So I drive an hour and twenty mins to Door Chesta Mah to get them. Get a flat on the way up, and break down on the way back. That's a whole nother story though. Let's just say that AAA gold cards, and flatbed tow trucks are high on the list of things I like. :bigok:

So here they are. In all their glory *sarcasm*:

IMAG0099.jpg IMAG0101.jpg IMAG0102.jpg
IMAG0100.jpg IMAG0103.jpg IMAG0104.jpg
IMAG0105.jpg

They obviously need some cleaning. Looks like someone spilt something down the front of one. Cabinets are not perfect. But they're VERY well built nonetheless. Except for the speaker connector type thingys. Waaaaay too small!

These things go DEEP!

And they are really accurate. Very crisp. They bass is tight. They make the music sound so precise. So alive. They make me think of two guys in front of a mixing board nodding their heads in approval. Like an 80's music video. They analyze the music, and point out all the work that went into it. They remind you of every aspect of the music, and I mean EVERY aspect of the music. If someone made a mistake they thought would go by unnoticed. They weren't using these for monitors.

Pretty damn good soundstage. Almost holographic to me. I feel like I can see Freddie Mercury standing in my room. And very good off axis. They don't hit like the sub in my car does, but they're the closest speaker I own too it. Put on "boom boom pow" by Black Eyed Peas with the loudness button depressed. And the neighbors will be pounding on the wall. You can take that to the bank!

Honestly these are about the most accurate speakers I feel I'll ever get, without spending 5 times what I did ($110). The Chinese gentlemen I bought them from was a tough negotiator. I only got him down $10. And honestly I only did that to make up for my other expenses. I could have nitpicked quite a few things, but I knew I was getting a good deal anyway. And I felt he had a right to make a few bucks for his trouble. Especially since I held him up when I got the flat tire. I think he got them at a yard sale, or something. Probably paid $5 LOL:eek:

But either way. These are some very interesting speakers. While I can't say these are the end all, be all. And I'm done looking at CL. But what I will say is. That despite my troubles getting them today. I'm very glad I did. :D

And I hope others on this wonderful forum had some good luck finding their own deals over this weekend. And if anyone else has any similar stories. Please let us know. I for one. Would love to read about it.

Thank you all, and happy 4th of July. I would not want to be anywhere else in the world. And that alone deserves to be celebrated. :beerchug:

BTW You can read more about my search for a speaker that sounds as good as Glenn's (GD70) L980's do here in this thread down below. It turned into an ADS history lesson, or something like that. But it's decent reading, and you'll see why this isn't just a pair of speakers. It's a quest. Or just another speaker junkie getting his fix. Who knows?

I think you got a nice set of speakers for $110.
I have a pair of fairly recent Canton outdoor speakers, maybe Plus XL-2's. 5" two ways with metal drivers. Great sound for 9" cabinets. Little onbright side. Few weeks ago, aquired Karat 200 with stands for $10 at garage saleIMG_20170609_072222.jpg . Close to ADS sound. They look like your Quintos. Recently refinished them with sanding and Danish oil. Garage sale prices in my experience run the gamet. Sometimes they just want them gone to someone who will use them.
Enjoy your Cantons. There's a member, Bratwurst7, very Canton knowledgeable. He could fill you in on questions.

These are on the bright side too. I may have to consider doing the caps on them. Maybe I can get some that help it warm up a little.

Thank you

BTW I just read that the Karat was basically a replacement of these. And that it had bigger internal wiring. But they both had heavy duty baskets on the woofers.

If you bored on the PC some day. Look up the Canton website, not the city. Check out the lines linesof speakers they manufacture. I heard one of thier smaller towers at Expona audio show in Chicage this year. They were nice.
Canton makes some ultra high end stuff. Top shelf.

Bratwurst7 made up a chart of cross referances Canton cap numbers to thier values. The caps may be without values marked on them.
He advised checking the gaskets around the drives. He found some leaked.

Hmmm of of the woofers does sound a little off. That may be why. These look real easy to work on, and I think worth the trouble to do so. I'm not sure I want to bother with the looks of them, but this may be my first speaker rehab. The mechanicals anyway.

Thank you very much

You know I'm looking at your speakers, and to be fair. They'd be a deal at $200 w/ the stands. Stands alone are with a lot more then $10. That's a crazy deal!!!

The cabinets are gorgeous!

Canton makes great speakers all right, and the brand as a whole tends to fly under most folks radar,so good deals can be still found on 'em these days.
I absolutely love my GL-260 & Plus S,and I'm definitely on the lookout for some of the bigger ones like these.

And yeah at first I was skeptical about the Canton's seemingly enthusiastic frequency ratings as well, but IMO they actually go as deep as the specs suggest.

Their subwoofers aint bad either. ;)
I love my AS85-SC,got that NOS/NIB for $150.00,and that's like a $750.00 sub new.
And that too goes lower than it has any right to go.

The GL-260 ~ AS85-SC combo is a (nearfield) match made in heaven.

Congrats on the excellent score here !

Signed another Canton fan.

Yup that's how I got these so cheap. I could have worn him down further do to the condition of the cabs, but he was a nice guy. I didn't have it in me to do it. But if these were ADS. I would have paid twice as much I'm sure. Maybe more. These things are beasts for their size. They don't have that big cabinet sound, but they don't have a small sound at all.

I looked up the GL 260's, and the others. I want some, and I don't normally like small. But they work outside too, and there's a set right now on Ebay with the mounts. If my car didn't just break. I'd have already bought them. Paint them a color that matches my condo so no one complains, and put them out on my deck. I'm out there all the time. That's where I drink my coffee when I wake up. It's love to listen to them out there.

I didn't mention. I'd you look in the pictures. There's one of the back showing the holes for mounting these if needed. These things are amazing. I don't want to sleep. I had on a bunch of stuff on Google Play through my laptop and DAC. Now I'm on my third album (B. Joel Glass Houses). Running on a Pioneer PL-255 into a Sansui 8900zdb. And even at low volume they sound great. And yes they go that low, and probably that high too. I was skeptical too. Was being the key word here.

And I like that they have different driver sizes too. They really are the best deal around I think. What other German built 3 way speaker with these specs are you getting for under 3 or 4 hundred bucks?

I don't know of any either. Amazing!

I almost didn't go get them. I was very hesitant. Boston is far, and I was worried about my car for some reason. Even though I never have before. But Boston can be tough with traffic, and the heat. Then I almost gave up after I got the flat. But if I ever see another pair I like again, even in Boston. I'm getting them. They're very impressive. I mean they even look bad arse. Like they're hot rodded out with that huge woofer. They remind me of another speaker that I liked, but I can't place it. Either way I'm very happy.

Should we start a Canton fan boy club? :)
Actually no. I should shut up, before the price goes up. Wait what am I thinking?

DO NOT BUY CANTON SPEAKERS. THEY'RE CRAP!!!

There that's better.

Thank you for the response. :)

I see great minds think alike,LOL.
I painted my GL-260 OD green to match the Corsair C70 PC case that my headphone/nearfield system uses.
There are a bunch of pics of that rig in my album here at AK if you wanna check them out.

And even at low volume they sound great.
Totally agree here too, that's definitely one of their stronger points.
They're not affraid of decent power either,IMO the power ratings are very conservative,I'm 100% certain these can handle more power than they rate them at.
I'm feeding my GL-260 with a EV7100 power amp that's rated for 100wpc > 4ohms and I feel perfectly comfortable doing so.

Yeah I know what you mean,,,I always think the same exact thing everytime I post in a Canton thread here @ AK...

What's one to do ? On the one hand were soooo happy we found these, and we wanna share our thoughts.
But we know we cant buy up all of them,so we cautiously spread the word hoping we are'nt shooting ourselves in the foot in the process.

I'm guessing that 100 watts is perfect for that speaker.

I'm very curious though. That's a pro amp with XLR connections right? How do you connect an RCA type home setup to those? And what about the ones with the 1/4 inch speaker plugs? How do you connect those to regular speakers? I've seen some nice stuff cheap, but wouldn't know what to do.

those look like the earlier versions of the fonum's i have..
extremely well built speakers, i pulled apart all drivers and decent quality written all over them.. also great cabinets, very thick beefy and well made..
but something is just not right with them..
if i listen to them for half an hour i think my other speakers sound crap, if i go A B test then vice versa .. that's why i could never let them go

You Rang?

At some point I will check the gaskets and caps of my Karat 200's. But, with the amount of bass the 8" woofer in this 20# speaker produces, hard to figure the gaskets are bad. I think they are a near perfect bedroom size speaker, that does not need a sub to fill in.
They are not bright like my newer Plus XL Cantons. Voiced similarito ADS I have.

Hi Andy! You did well. I don't want to get deep into value so I'll just say that over here the 540's generally go for 2 to 3 times what you paid for them.

I haven't had the chance to lay hands on or listen a pair of 540's yet but that might change in the next month or so. A friend at work has a brother that bought a pair and they need work so they may come to me for that.

In general, as Old Guy8 said, recapping will be a good idea. I've been using MKP film caps on the tweeters (Jantzen), MKT on the upper end of the mids (Monacor), and elcos for the lower end of the mids and the woofers (Mundorf). Almost all of the caps that I've seen have drifted UP some. A little bit on the small ones running to a lot high on the big ones. The caps on the woofers have generally drifted up enough to start shifting the crossover point down from where it should be. Other than that touch up all of the solder connections, including a very quick tough on the wires where they connect on the drivers.

I've also been adding proper binding posts. I haven't been replacing any of the wiring except for the connection from the binding posts, where I use 1.5mm² (around 15AWG). I'm going to be shameless and link to my threads on Quinto's, there should be some useful info there for you.

The weak link with the Quinto's is the tweeter. You need to feed the amp with clean power and enough of it. At least 1/3 of the Quinto's that I've seen have had a dead tweeter. For your 540's you need something with a good 110 watts+.

I agree with all of your comments in general. They apply to all Canton's really, it's the Canton house sound. You can't go wrong pairing a Canton speaker with a Yamaha amp. They are a match made in Heaven.

More later,
