Today's score. Canton Quinto 540 w/pics

I think you got a nice set of speakers for $110.
I have a pair of fairly recent Canton outdoor speakers, maybe Plus XL's. 5" two ways with metal drivers. Great sound for 9" cabinets. Little on bright side. Few weeks ago, aquired Karat 200 with stands for $10 at garage sale. Close to ADS sound. They look like your Quintos. Recently refinished them with sanding and Danish oil. Garage sale prices in my experience run the gamet. Sometimes they just want them gone to someone who will use them.
Enjoy your Cantons. There's a member, Bratwurst7. He could fill you in on questions.

Beautiful looking Karat 200's!
$10? Someone was VERY nice to you. Are they 4 ohm or 8 ohm?
http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/canton-karat-200-thread.751202/

The Karat 200 is the follow on to the Quinto 520. A bit larger cabinet. Great sounding speakers. I pair them with a Yamaha AX-700 or AX-750 amp.
The Karat 100 follows the Quinto 510. Exactly the same cab, different woofer and crossover points.
The Karat 300 follows the Quinto 530. Larger cab, larger mid, different crossover points.
There is no direct follow on to the Quinto 540 with it's 12" woofer that I know of (yet). But the Karat 300 has the same 38mm mid as the Q540. I haven't had the chance to hear a K300 yet but am expecting something sweet when I do.
All of the early Karat x00's have spring clips that accept a bit larger dia speaker wire than the Quinto's. The late Kx00's have binding posts.

Cheers,
James

I'm very curious though. That's a pro amp with XLR connections right? How do you connect an RCA type home setup to those?
Well that's easy enough to answer,,,I dont use RCA outs from the preamp to that EV-7100 amp...
The preamp for that hp/nf rig is a NAD 106 and it has XLR outs (in addition to 2 pr.s of RCA/analog outs w/1pr. in use for the subwoofer).
So yeah that's another item that flys under most folks radar,I got if for $150.00,I mean imagine that,an XLR out equipped preamp for that price.
It also has an absolutely awesome headphone amp section in it,one that's tailor made for driving the vintage high-impedence headphones (for me that = AKG).
The NAD 1000s preamp is essentially the same preamp (XLR outs) as the 106,the 106 just has a few slightly improved pieces internally.

There are a couple good threads here about those NAD 1000s/106 preamps,so a search will provide more info if you're interested in reading up on those preamps.

And what about the ones with the 1/4 inch speaker plugs?
I dont use the 1/4" plugs in any of my gear, but there are ways of using them that are'nt too overly complicated, again a search should provide plenty of info 'bout that.

How do you connect those to regular speakers?
That EV-7100 amp uses standard 5 way binding posts for the speakers,so that allows a few different methods to connect speakers.
Me,I just use plain wire (16ga. OFC) inserted in the binding post thru-hole & tighten 'em down.
I was gonna use some U terminals but finding the right ones turned into a PITA so I went the simple route instead.

It's a pretty user friendly amp so long as one can work with the XLR inputs.
As a FYI that EV-7100 is a dual mono design which I'm sure helps it's sonics.
And dont let the 1ru size fool you,it's heavy as he!!,so yeah it's built like a tank LOL.

And that hp/nf rig sounds amazing,it's easily my best sounding system right now.

Rundown of that hp/nf system:
Headphone/Nearfiled 2.1 System:
Primary Source = Desktop PC w/SB Zx Using Optical Outs > Monoprice Powered Optical Splitter. Optical Cables Are All Emotiva.

Signal Chain = Parasound D/AC-1000 > NAD 106 Preamp (W/DOD 830 Ser. II EQ In Tape Loop) using XLR Outs > ElectroVice 7100 Power Amp.

Currently The Only Speakers Used For This System Are Canton GL-260 w/a Canton AS85-SC subwoofer (via RCA outs from NAD 106).

Primary Headphones Are AKG K240DF (High Impedance ~ via NAD 106 Preamp) -or- Sony MDR-7506 (Low Impedance ~ via SB Zx ACM).
Secondary Headphones Include ~ Realistic Pro50 (AKA: AKG K250) ~ AKG K240 Sextett ~ AKG K240 Monitor ~ AKG K260 Pro (all high impedence).

All IC's XLR & RCA Are Mogami ~ Speaker Wire Is OFC 16 AWG ~ PC Also Has Remote Control Capability via HP PC Remote Set-up.
Power Is Supplied By A 1ru Middle Atlantic PD915-R Power Unit ~ Power Cords Are All 15A/14ga. From Middle Atlantic -or- Tripp Lite.

Pic of it vvvv here vvvv.

Yeah I'm beyond happy with how the whole thing worked out.

Hope I've answered any questions adequately,if not feel free to ask more.

James,
Thank you. Previous owner inherited them. Wasgoing wireless. So my gain.
They are the 8 ohm with binding posts. I did a thread here on my refinishing with Watco Natural Danish oil. My first speaker refinish project.
I have an eye open for Cantons in the wild.
Thanks for the link.
Cheers,

Those look like a fine set of quality speakers.

Complete fix all the ailing stuff (seal around woofer, recap, any cosmetics as best as possible) and enjoy those!

Thank God someone finally bought those.
I get an email alert whenever Canton is listed for the Boston CL, he cancels & reposts...every...other...damn...day.

Well, since you are here, and because I know that you have an amazing amount of knowledge about German speakers, please tell us a bit about the Braun/Canton/Heco connections and history. :)

Cheers,
James

No connections I am aware of other than they shared many of the same driver parts suppliers and adhered to the Taunus Sound dictum.

Pretty good tactic. Worked on me. Better get them, before someone else grabs them. LOL

He was a nice guy. I think he probably goes to yard sales, and flea markets. Then turns stuff over. He asked me if he should call me if he gets more speakers. He was all upset about me wanting to hear them, until I popped my trunk, pulled out some speaker wire, and pointed to my 5 channel amp. He thought that was great. I tried them right in the street in Dorchester in 90+ degree heat. Not the easiest way to buy speakers.

Thank you all for the help, and advice. Bratwurst7s I feel I may end up asking you for help on the crossovers at some point. I'm in no rush though. I'm gonna work on some other tricks first. Maybe do them in the fall. My garage isn't insulated. So it gets crazy hot in there.

Hi Andy, Most happy to be of service.

If/when you get into the speakers please post the part number of the tweeter. The pair that my friend's brother bought have a dead tweeter and mid. I've been able to find out that the mid is a 1188 (same mid as the Karat 300) but am still not sure about the tweeter.

And if you find that any of the crossover caps aren't on my list just let me know what they are and I'll try to find the values for you.

Cheers,
James

Oh man. I haven't listened to these in a while. I should break them out, and try them. Anybody know the sensitivity in these. I know they like power. But I'm curious how they'll sound on my HH Scott 200. But if they're too low in SPL. I probably won't even bother. They're laid on their sides right now acting as a table for my turntable I hardly use too. Streaming is too easy.

Hey all. So I tried to not buy anymore speakers, but well ya know. :dunno:

So I'm perusing Craigys List O'goodies. And I spy these speakers I've never heard of. Look them up. Seem very nice. Email dude. Get back a cryptic response. Thought nah, not in the mood for CL weirdos today. But then I thought hmm maybe just not a native speaker. And thankfully this was the case.

So I drive an hour and twenty mins to Door Chesta Mah to get them. Get a flat on the way up, and break down on the way back. That's a whole nother story though. Let's just say that AAA gold cards, and flatbed tow trucks are high on the list of things I like. :bigok:

So here they are. In all their glory *sarcasm*:

They obviously need some cleaning. Looks like someone spilt something down the front of one. Cabinets are not perfect. But they're VERY well built nonetheless. Except for the speaker connector type thingys. Waaaaay too small!

These things go DEEP!

And they are really accurate. Very crisp. They bass is tight. They make the music sound so precise. So alive. They make me think of two guys in front of a mixing board nodding their heads in approval. Like an 80's music video. They analyze the music, and point out all the work that went into it. They remind you of every aspect of the music, and I mean EVERY aspect of the music. If someone made a mistake they thought would go by unnoticed. They weren't using these for monitors.

Pretty damn good soundstage. Almost holographic to me. I feel like I can see Freddie Mercury standing in my room. And very good off axis. They don't hit like the sub in my car does, but they're the closest speaker I own too it. Put on "boom boom pow" by Black Eyed Peas with the loudness button depressed. And the neighbors will be pounding on the wall. You can take that to the bank!

Honestly these are about the most accurate speakers I feel I'll ever get, without spending 5 times what I did ($110). The Chinese gentlemen I bought them from was a tough negotiator. I only got him down $10. And honestly I only did that to make up for my other expenses. I could have nitpicked quite a few things, but I knew I was getting a good deal anyway. And I felt he had a right to make a few bucks for his trouble. Especially since I held him up when I got the flat tire. I think he got them at a yard sale, or something. Probably paid $5 LOL:eek:

But either way. These are some very interesting speakers. While I can't say these are the end all, be all. And I'm done looking at CL. But what I will say is. That despite my troubles getting them today. I'm very glad I did. :D

And I hope others on this wonderful forum had some good luck finding their own deals over this weekend. And if anyone else has any similar stories. Please let us know. I for one. Would love to read about it.

Thank you all, and happy 4th of July. I would not want to be anywhere else in the world. And that alone deserves to be celebrated. :beerchug:

BTW You can read more about my search for a speaker that sounds as good as Glenn's (GD70) L980's do here in this thread down below. It turned into an ADS history lesson, or something like that. But it's decent reading, and you'll see why this isn't just a pair of speakers. It's a quest. Or just another speaker junkie getting his fix. Who knows?

Hey Andy!
Those look like a fun set of speakers that should clean up easily. Cantons have a great rep and hope to hear a pair, maybe these at the next Frankenfest in March?

I've never been able to find a sensitivity spec for any of the Quinto's. But the follow on Karat 100/200/300 are nothing more than an improved Quinto (many of the same drivers, lightly changed crossovers, a little larger cabs) are straddling 90db and from hearing them I'm guessing that the Quinto's are very close to that.

Chances of me even making it there are slim actually. I haven't even thought about it. I need to read the posts. I don't even know where it is. Either way. If I do manage to make. These won't be there. I've been heavily into low power tubes, and high sensitivity speakers. Like Klipsch (love horns) and lately full range drivers. I'm trying to put together some open baffles. But money, time, and the cold have been delaying me.

These are really nice speakers. They're really beat looking though. And need some work to make them sound perfect too. I don't think I'd ever go to the trouble of making them look great. But I may make them sound better. I think the woofers could use a reseal, and it wouldn't hurt to at least check the crossover. Just to see if it's all in spec. I would need to know what that is though. I'm sure we can work on that too though.

Thank you for reminding about the fest Glenn. I'm glad you did. Are you bringing anything special yourself? I'm still jealous of your ADS I saw in Clinton last year. Lol

Thanks. I figured it was around there. But wouldn't mind knowing the exact spec. No biggie. It's probably not exactly accurate anyway.

Hey Andy,

Jim made the thread for the next fest, March 10th. I plan on bringing something, maybe the Angelicas again.
Frank had a pair of L980's that were sold off in the family auction after he passed. From what I read, they were a hot item!

Yea thanks man. I read some of it real quick right before I came to work. It's closer for me. So maybe. But I would have to at least be late for work that night. If not take it off. That's hard to do. They depend on me. So we'll see.

I would love to see those speakers in person though. Those are too cool.

And the ADS are kinda off my radar now. I love them. But don't do SS anymore really. And don't have a powerful enough tube amp for them. I've watched a few go by. It was not easy. But I had to. Only so much money, and room.

Andy B.
