Tone Controls?

Eh that is a misconception held my many people.

For those in the know, a pig is best positioned in Pigtopia! That is the preferred hangout of all pigs, and far more comfortable than a gentle charcoal warming. Let me illustrate:

And while not on Pigtopia, we can see that pig love is a world wide phenomenon.

Tone controls are a personal preference as much as the selection you are listening to. My preference is to not use them. In my earlier years there was lots of experimentation with tone and EQ controls, now my system has evolved to where it's just a distraction.

I am in the same happy place

Haven't had tone controls in years. Have to admit though that I occasionally miss a loudness switch.

Keep in mind that the harshness you experience can be in large part due to nasty room reflections that need to be tamed. Room treatments are comparable to surgery while tone controls often are more like slapping a Band-Aid on a gaping wound. :)

Better than a switch is a variable knob.

Couldn't agree more.

I had an opportunity to play with the variable loudness feature on my friends Yamaha A-S500 Integrated amp. He has a small pair of very good quality PSB bookshelf speakers in a large room, and as I expected bass is lacking, Especially at low to moderate SPL's. With a little experimenting I was able to make these small speakers sound WAY bigger than they are. Ideally they should be mated to a decent sub for a room this size.

Kudo's to Yamaha for including this important feature on their receivers and amps.

Hi all,

So, after a number of years of playing with and reading about audio equipment but with a small budget, I am wondering how many use the bass/treble controls on a regular basis as part of the set up. When I read manuals, etc., they talk about a defeat pathway that bypasses all the tone controls so the circuit is "cleaner". This makes me feel badly for using tone controls since I am no longer 'cleaner" , lol

Anyway, do you use the bass/treble controls or an equalizer as part of your normal system setup? Right now I have brought my ESS Model 10s in from the garage and they have a really bright (painfully so) Philips tweeter. I turn the treble down and it helps tremendously, but I feel bad for doing so. How do you set things up? Thanks!

A

If you like them use them.
It's that simple.

I consider the Bass and Treble controls to be like salt and pepper. Some like salt, some like pepper some like a combination, while some don't like any. I use my controls sparingly.

i just get a kick out of my little tiny loki tickling the giant AR9s, and there's the defeat switch when i get carried away LOL

I find that the people that dont use tone controls like to tell people that whenever they get a chance....kind of like those that dont own a TV:

https://www.theonion.com/area-man-constantly-mentioning-he-doesnt-own-a-televisi-1819565469

"CHAPEL HILL, NC–Area resident Jonathan Green does not own a television, a fact he repeatedly points out to friends, family, and coworkers–as well as to his mailman, neighborhood convenience-store clerks, and the man who cleans the hallways in his apartment building."

""I, personally, would rather spend my time doing something useful than watch television," Green told a random woman Monday at the Suds 'N' Duds Laundromat, noticing the establishment's wall-mounted TV. "I don't even own one.""

"
According to Melinda Elkins, a coworker of Green's at The Frame Job, a Chapel Hill picture-frame shop, Green steers the conversation toward television whenever possible, just so he can mention not owning one.

"A few days ago, [store manager] Annette [Haig] was saying her new contacts were bothering her," Elkins said. "The second she said that, I knew Jonathan would pounce. He was like, 'I didn't know you had contacts, Annette. Are your eyes bad? That a shame. I'm really lucky to have almost perfect vision. I'm guessing it's because I don't watch TV. In fact, I don't even own one."

""About a week after I met him, we were talking, and I made some kind of Simpsons reference," Gerela said. "He asked me what I was talking about, and when I told him it was from a TV show, he just went off, saying how the last show he watched was some episode of Cheers, and even then, he could only watch for about two minutes before having to shut it off because it insulted his intelligence so terribly.""

You have anymore of that :beatnik:...;)

Oh and My tone controls are bypassed, did the space instead

An erroneous interpretation of the loudness compensation instrument by an erroneous interpretation of its nature.

The nature of loudness compensation (whenever wished by a listener) has nothing to do with audio equipment parameters and/or listening room reaction.

But being only determined by the DIFFERENCE between the “natural” SPL of any natural sound material and the SPL while listening to exactly the same sound material electro-acoustically, determined by the human hearing physiological property.

While listened to at higher SPLs than natural, the perception of lows and extra-lows (from 20 to 700 Hz) becomes exaggerated and the listener could wish their attenuation, the stronger the SPL difference deeper.

While listened to at lower SPLs than natural, the perception of lows and extra-lows (from 20 to 700 Hz) becomes diminished and the listener could wish their boost, the stronger the SPL difference deeper.

The explanation of this human hearing physiological property, result of long-term statistical research:

My main PreAmp has no tone controls. My old Hafler 945 does along with the in-out switch. Although I leave the tone controls flat, it usually sounds a tad better engaged.

Nope, I keep the Temple pure and clean......cant carry a gun and toke it out.

But to your point on talking about it, it’s the same with everything on here, receivers vs separates, vintage vs new, horns vs no horns...

Not sure what your point was
