Too Busy - Made Time Anyway - Wharfedale Super 12 FS AL

Hey mang,

You gettin any sleep?

These are looking fabulous!

They are BIG!

Glenn

Hey mang!

Funny you mention sleep. It's been dicey at best, but because of part time job 3 days a week. I have to be here at 7am. I am a morning person, but being up, ready and gone before 7am is taking its toll.

The Pioneer cabinets are a good chunk of change over 5 cubic feet, they are LARGE. I really need to go with those, even with the bracing and deadening. The cabinets that came with the Super 12's are large too, but I don't believe they're large enough.

Somewhere in the literature I've read over the last week I found mention of an attenuator for this setup, am attempting to find that again.

I believe now I can say that I have too many projects going at once.

Well, you know what they say about idle hands...

Good to keep busy, and great you have some more work.

I'm about to order the rosewood veneer for my amp/pre amp project. I calculated about 10 sq. feet will do the job. The gear is back with the tech working out a few other issues. Hope this will be it electronically, except for the illusive meter. Waiting to hear on that.

Sheeyit, it's amazing what even a small amount of regular cash can do. Oh man, I can hardly wait to see that rosewood veneer action! And, I can smell your amp and pre getting complete from here. Well, nearly complete anyways. That darned meter situation, GAR.

I can smell it too, literally! The gear spent years in a smokers house. It's way better after I gave it a good cleaning.

The veneer will be a lot of fun to do. I just got real busy with a freelance project for the next month, so the re-veneer may take some time to focus on. At least I'll be able to be listening to it!

Being able to listen to it before it's complete is a wonderful thing. Although, for me it slows me in getting the project completed. My early Rectilinears still need the grill cloth put back on and risers made ...

so have you tried the drivers with the new foams in? curious how well those foams work.

I've got 1 complete, green felt not yet in though. Oldest boy came for a visit, been hiking and spending time with him. I did a bench test with the 1 and it operates "as it should". Clean, rub, noise free.

The 55 year old adhesive was hard/crystalized and a bitch to get fairly clean on the paper cone. Thankfully Rick Cobb addressed that in his instructions and mentions that it's not super important to get it molecularly clean. The glue he provides (tastes like Aileen's) is supposed to deal with irregularities and imperfections.

I don't have a baffle or enclosure to test mount the speakers, easily. So, that's all I have at the moment.

Biggles

Ok, that is encouraging

I was under the impression you'd already installed the foam. No biggie. As expected, it's not a perfect fit. It takes some wrangling to get the inner lip over the paper cone. Especially when you've applied the glue, then need to wrangle. I did a dry install of the foam ring and let it sit overnight. I don't know if that helped stretch things a bit, but I did it anyway.

Once the glue was applied to the inner ring, and the surround was in place, it takes a little more work to make sure it's even. But it falls right in to place.

Getting the outer ring securely down took about 20 minutes of me carefully pressing. I searched for plates and lids that would hold it in to place, even clothes pins. One needs to find something about 11.5" around with a straight down edge. Otherwise it presses against the round portion of the surround and squishes everything out, not a good fit!

I just sat on a chair, put the Super 12 on a Lazy Susan and worked it. Every once in a while I would jack the tone on so it would self center, just to make sure. Again, 20 to 30 minutes in, all was FINE.

i had the foam installed on the paper cone and was setting up to do the outer edge. when i hooked the driver up to the speaker leads so i could run the 30hz test tone i realized the driver was dead.

i mean, i went through denial and grief and all that. but finally accepted it. of course should have tested the driver 1st; guess i learn this way...

Hey Roger,

Ahhhh, yeah. School is expensive no matter how you slice it. If that's the worse thing that happens to us this week, we're good. At least these old drivers are dirt cheap compared to their FS counterparts, eh?

When I refoamed all those Bose 901 drivers, I made a rings out of cardboard about an inch high. Once the lip was glued and tacked down, I put some weight on the rings to hold down the outer surround edges. Worked like a charm. I've also seen lots of clothes pins used all around the speaker on a thread on AK.

Bingo, should have done that. I've got the second one to do! Maybe tomorrow, maybe the Sansui's.

Heeyaw! The tweeters arrived today! They came from over three thousand miles away and showed up in a few days, how awesome is that? Dang!

I believe the oil capacitors should be here fairly soon too. I need to source me some 3/4" something or other so I can cut me a new front baffle.

Neat!

Love when audio stuff shows up at my front door!

You're cooking now!

Glenn

I love it too. Although, the local mail delivery people lost a package from an audio buddy with an audio gift and an order from Simply Speakers (refoam kit for the Altec Lansing 101's).

I've been looking to buy a used 10" portable table saw, found a router to borrow. I've never used a router before, this should get interesting. I know what I want my front baffles to look like. I just need to translate that in to action. Cross yer fangers.

Biggles

Here's what I'm going to be modeling my front baffles from. Gang-Twanger found these for my by doing the search, "Wharfedale W12FRS". I have no idea what the size, dimensions of the enclosure is. I just needed a guideline, something to shoot from the hip with. The tweeters are mirror imaged and the ports seem to be as well.

Congrats on the surrounds, and nice tweets!

And interesting ports in GT's pics. Looks like 2 sides of a box with a back on it. Captures (guides?) some back waves ?
