Difficult to pick just five, but here goes:

Joe Satriani
Eddie Van Halen

And that's just in one genre of music, I could pick five each out of at least two other genres.
 
I seen a few people like Eddie Van Halen. So what do you think about the latest Van Halen album? Eddie tears it up pretty good in "A Different Kind of Truth" And David Lee Roth sings like he never left...lol

It seems it has become incongruous for a Hendrix enthusiast to be an EVH fan but I really appreciate what Eddie brought to the table back in the day. Sometimes I’ll catch a flash of brilliance from the guy that literally brings a smile to my face. I think Hendrix, McLaughlin and Van Halen are the three most inventive, influential and iconoclastic of “modern” guitarists.
I think Eddie is not listed a lot of times because so many of his contemporaries like Satriani, Vai and Petrucci are more skilled than he is. There are a lot more who are at his level of virtuosity. Plus there seems to be a backlash of sorts against him because the guy can be a flaming ass. People didn’t take kindly to him unabashedly trashing icons like Jimmy Page in the ‘80s.

Django and Thompson narrowly missed my cut. Favorite severn and they'd have been on the list. Expand to eight and I'd have added Billy Corgan. Not.
