Top vintage Sansui speakers ?

That's quite ok. We all have our own experience.
For me my Sansui amplifiers have nothing to do with how they look. I don't have receivers.
I think the sound quality is up there with amplifiers costing € 10000 but this is based on the biased experience of other people. I have never heard a new recent amplifier in that price range so I can not be sure what I would think.
I would say that the department store Sansui loudspeakers hardly will have covered all Sansui loudspeakers produced. The ones I own where from before our time (1965-1969).
But if you know some model names it could be useful for the OP.

In addition to these SP-L speakers Sansui also made the SP-L500 ( which I have ) the SP-L300, SP-L200 and I also believe the SP-L150. The SP-L500 are 3 way speakers with a 12" cone type Woofer, 6 1/2" cone type Midrange and 2 1/4 horn type Tweeter. The build quality is very heavy and they sound great. The larger models quoted above are all 2 way speakers for comparison except maybe the SP-L750. When you take the drivers out of the cabinets they definately compare to the JBL look with strong Aluminum Die-Cast Frames and Long Travel Voice Coils. They also have that West Coast Sound like the JBL's.

I don't remember the model number of any of the speakers I listened to I just remember they had to many drivers per cabinet with metal dust caps like 60's & 70's bass guitar speakers I also remember a red outline on the woofer and cheesy looking gray plastic horns and little round piezo looking tweeters stuck wherever they would fit. But thank goodness you like vintage and I like modern and at the end of the day we are both enjoying our systems and listening to music if we all liked the same thing it would be a very boring world.

Indeed would be very boring if we would all like the same things.
Don't get me wrong, I like the style of Sansui it is just not the main reason I have them. The same is for the vintage part. I don't have Sansui because they are vintage, I have them because they have excellent sound quality, interesting and advanced circuit design that delivers, good build quality from materials and components used up to layout.
I love the ability to have different sounding, high quality components that I can switch out, for the price of one new high quality ( same level ) component.
I have to guess that the loudspeakers you describe were mostly from the components sets of the '80s so I can understand they did not leave a good impression.
 
Sansui speakers always reminded me of the cheap audio junk GI's brought back from the Far East. Sansui may have made good speakers for the domestic market, but very few of them made it to the US.

Yes, the 200 are great sounding but the 300 are way better as there is a huge aluminum mid horn and they are Rare!
I have found the best thing with Sansui is recap with film caps and treat the stiff cloth surrounds (from age) with the correct sealer and the bass will be where it should be.

Sansui didn't get famous selling speakers. They normally are pretty Kabuki looking, way too many drivers.

I am amongst the crazy folk who like them, and am in possession of TWO sets of SP-X11000 speakers, one set of SP-3005, and one of SP-10. Some of the models which get slightly more respect than Rodney Dangerfield include

SP-5000
SP-L700
SP-5500

And the massive SP-X11000 is from time to time appreciated

Any chance you would part with a pair of the sp-x11000 ?
 
There is a nice pair of SPL700's on the bay at a reasonable price. Pick up only AZ. No relation but own a pair and they are nice speakers.
