But .... is'nt it the capstan motor we hear of troubles with ?

The capstan system does'nt care that much if it's 7 or 10inch reel's it has to pull.

(I'm not sure if there has been issues with the reel motors)

The only complaints I have ever heard about the Reel Motors, have been that they are DC Motors, and that they eventually will get slow, to non working, if a person excessively uses either Rewind or Fast Forward. But I have not seen any evidence of this myself. I have the X2000R, and mine spins just fine, every motor. I use rewind and Fast Forward, and my Reels Show No Signs of Slowing at All. In fact, they have very fast movement in either Rewind or Fast Forward. No problem. I was not sure of any problems with the capstan Motor, only that most problems are due to the Motor not installed Properly, with the Shim/Washer Placement on anchoring screws, or The Belt and Lube Issues, where the Belt is stretched and needs replacing, or the Lube is hardened and needs cleaning, and a Relube. Also, many say that you MUST USE GENUINE TEAC BELTS..and NOT Generic Replacements. I cant understand how someone would make a Generic that was Not to Specifications, but this is what I have read alot of, regarding the Belt Replacement. And the Belt is responsible for much of the Malfunctioning of this deck, so it needs regular replacement for best performance. Ray

Both my X2000' are the non autoreverse version - they needed new belts last year, got then from vintage-electronics , and they work fine
Could be the -R deck is more sensitive to belts - because of the need for moving the belt a bit when reversing

really can't tell about the reel motors , my decks don't wind very fast, not compared to the Revox or Sony, or the old A3300 - the decks may have a been used quite a bit at the previous owner ( a school ) - one deck had worn heads , but they're easy replaceable and don't cost that much.

maybe i should test the torque on the reel motors to see if they're about to die ?

Hi Jan,

Yes, your correct. Id test the torque, just to be certain of condition. And your also correct about the AutoReverse, being more sensitive. The belt must be in Spec. and motor mount shims in proper place for everything to work proper. If one thing is off, all kinds of problems begin to happen. Also, they do not spin at the speed of the Revox or other decks with AC motors, like the older TEAC's and Revox, AKAI's etc...those are much faster, even Tandberg and Sony.....I was told this by several Tech's, that the DC motors are the weaker ones when it comes to speed of REW. and FF AC motors are more powerful, and trouble free. So, my deck REW's and FF's fast, but not as fast as my other decks. Though nothing is wrong with the motors. Ray

ahh .. if you deck also seems slower in winding, mine are probable fine.

besides that, i'm not winding tapes much on the X2000, just flips the tape and play the other side :)

On my ½tracks decks i do rewind the tape - i've been thinking about if it could be and idea to store them tail out ? that way, when they're store they are really pretty wound on the reel, backside is, one have to rewind the entire tape before playing it.

...hmm... well .. have to wind it anyway :D

Hi jan,

From all the professionals I have talked with, using 1/2 track decks, and all that I have read regarding tape care, its best to store 1/2 track tapes tail out, this way, the tape has a perfect pack when stored, and also the tape is not packed too tight, from rewinding it, and then storing it, which can cause printthrough/echo on tapes. This often happens most on non backcoated tapes, but can also happen to backcoated tapes as well. Its mainly from being stored in a rewound state, with alot of extra tension on the tape, compared to play mode/tails out. I know that you have to rewind, prior to playing, but its considered the best way to store tapes. I dont use rewind or fastforward very often either. But I asked a question, similar to my Post here, about the various decks, AKAI, Pioneer, Tandberg, Technics, TEAC etc....to a technician named Joey Stumpf, he is in the Arizona area I think, and he supposedly strips down every deck, and cleans everything, prior to restoration/recalibrating to factory specs. He told me that my AKAI, and Tandbergs are among my best decks, due to the AC Motors. The TEAC A series also used the big AC motors for the reels etc...he said that these motors are much more powerful, and can take alot more abuse/useage of Rewind and fastforward, whereas a DC motor, like the TEAc X series, can wear down faster. this is why the speed of fastforward and Rewind are so much faster and poweful on the AC Motor decks, like the TEAc A series, Revox, tandberg, AKAI, etc....I would think your motors are fine. Its just the difference between AC and DC motors, from what I have been told by many.

As a FYI, there is another post here, about the Tension Arms of the AKAI GX-747, and replacing the small belts that can stretch and cause the arms to malfunction. many people are buying the belt kits on ebay and complaining about them not being proper spec. There is a 100% proven belt that works with these tension arms, its available from Turntableneedles.com, a square cut belt. the original was a round profile belt. However, the procedure for replacing them is a bit difficult for the average guy, and there was a great Tutorial here from WolfBob, but Im now unable to find it. It was step by step, and in the archive threads, but I dont know how to find it. This would apply to the transport function of the GX-747 decks, that have tension arms that continue to go up and down, instead of automatically locking down in the tape Load position.

A note: The X series decks I saw most often for repairs were the 10.5" models. The X-3 and X-300 did better if they got regular capstan belt replacements and regular use. Problem is, these parts will most likely be hard to find down the line if Teac's supplier discontinues them. And many machines will have to be scrapped due to that issue. I love them when they're cared for but they need regular scheduled maintenance to run reliably.

The belts would be findable aftermarket, the capstan motor would be the hard to get part if supplies dry up. The X 300 and 300R were decent decks for light home use. I owned one back when you still could get new ones. I did use mine a lot and the week the warranty expired that motor failed (I called Teac and they sent me a replacement free after explaining when I bought the deck and my SN). I kept it another year and then sold it and replaced it with a ReVox A 77 Mk II.
