Can anyone tell me what a ellipsoid diamond is?
It's on my Grado Statement-reference cartridge. What is it similar too?
Line Contact? Vandenhul? SAS? or what?
Thanks

better question is which of those are most similar to a true ellipsoid.
Grado has been using that for quite sometime. I have one on my G2 stylus, my two "rare versions" of the Z2 cart, and on my 10MR stylus.

Thanks marcmorin. The reason for asking is because I get some noise between cuts that sounds like the record is dirty. It doesn't do it with my SAS though.
Have you had this problem with the elipsoid?
Of course I've cleaned the record & stylus.
Thanks

Can't answer to the noise difference between the two, as I find the higher spec Grado diamonds to be some of the quietest. I've seen your reference to this particular cart being below the performance of the M97/SAS. I'm thinking something is amiss. My 10MR stylus (ellipsoid) is quieter than my MCZ stylus and my Sonata-1 stylus. My MCZ and Sonata both sport the same stone. Have you looked at the stone under scope?

On DaveyW's website is photos of the Sonata and MCZ diamond. I have photos of the 10MR vs 8MZ vs 8MR, vs etc.

Another thought is, a good portion of surface noise is due to micro-mistracking. ie: How long and how loud pops and tics are is due to the stone in "free air"
