To ad to this, am I right in assuming that a direct drive tt’s motor/ spindle will spin back and forth with out the platter? It’s doing that. But when you put platter on, it’s as though the weight of it keeps motor for spinning.
 
Glad the info was helpful. There isn't much you could have done to cause the problem you discribe. Open it up again and recheck to see if everything is back in the proper place.. Most of these direct drives will jerk back and forth when they are turned on without the platter set on. Has to do with the speed sensing circuitry. Sorry I can't be of more help but I can't really tell on this problem from here. Maybe someone else may have a solution that works for you.
