TU-717 I like this tuner -Thoughts Please?!

Old_Tech

Yer-isn't!
Guys,

I am looking to set up my winter listening post here and am installing an outdoor Dipole way up high on the roof. I have many nice receivers but want a stand alone that is top notch for the main tuner.

I have heard so many good things about the TU-717.
I have been wanting a TU-717 for a long time and have found one that is like new. The gentleman who owns it assures me it is in top operation always in an air conditioned clean environment. OK, thats great but will this baby do it for me? I just want sensitive, clear and quiet reception with a fine name like Sansi to depend on. How do you guys like the TU-717? Its costing me 2 bills and is as I said almost mint.

Thanks so much! :music:

No complaints with my 717... much rather listen to that tuner than the Sony ST-S730ES that's wired into my house system.

I prefer my various Tandberg receivers or tuners over the TU-717, but no question the Sansui is a very fine piece. It can also be modified to perform better than stock in various ways.

Pricewise that's in the ballpark. For 2 bills I'd ideally want a clean fully working original tuner preferable with the original box and manual but those don't fall from the sky every day for that price.

I'm sure you've done your homework.

I've wanted one for awhile too.

I was wondering about your wants, finances and needs when you made the thread about the TU-317.

Now the TU-717 I think you can love. I hear the 517 is very similar.

They (717) go for about $150-$250 latest eBay completed listings plus shipping.

If I could afford it: I mean you get to audition, you know condition and history -- I would get it.

Yes you are right I was looking at a 317 but this came along for only 50 bucks more and it really is a much better tuner so I understand. The condition is near mint as I said. I almost bought a Mac MR78 last night for a grand ...whoa.

I am seeing these Sansui's in beautiful condition and hate to pass them by. I know you understand. Even with three recievers a Sansui G-7700, G-6000 and a Carver (Tuner) TX-11 I feel a 717 is the way to go. Just on what so many have said.

I love the Carver TX-11 but something tells me the 717 is even better.

The TU-717 is a very nice tuner! I'm sure you will be happy for that investment as long as it is aligned. I always pay a little extra for a minty unit to me it's worth knowing it was well cared for, and I hate nicks and scratches!
Regards,
Jim

It is my favorite tuner right now, thou I don't have many. Its easy to look at too :) This winter I plan on doing the mods to it and my TX-6800. I say get it:thmbsp: Here is a shot of when I first got mine. Required some deoxit and some lights. I did the light mod that is found on AK. So now in my avatar, it looks sweet :D

Given that you have some tuners already.....I might invest in a better antenna first! That being said....I love Sansui tuners, they certainly have good AK cred!

Look, you can afford it.

Ok, but if we have to ... let's quibble over $50 more:

Tu317, Tu417, Tu517, Tu717

The Tu317 goes for $40-80 on eBay according to fmtunerinfo, Tu717 $150-$200+

fmtunerinfo says the Tu317 is not very selective or sensitive.

I would say the Tu717 offers the better value any way you look at it. (Check speakerlabfan's link.)

And I would have said about the tu317 --- that would be overpriced if not "terrible" in comparison.

But if you're throwing a grand around, the Tu717 offers a damn good value for $200.

Oh and regarding "terrible." I know some people judge deals by score points.

Ask yourself, are you trying to impress us? Or are you actually buying it for yourself? There is nothing wrong in an actual fair deal for both seller and buyer if you can afford it and agree.

I am not trying to impress anyone just looking for support in my decision. There are alot of nice tuners out there and the Mac 78 I saw was like new. This 717 is too I just wanted to see what people in the know here at AK had to say.

Thanks Guys.

Ron, it's really hard to go wrong with the TU-717. I would audition it before plopping money down, but the price is the going rate on those. And if its indeed mint, that price could be on the lower end.

I can tell you this, I lucked into one about a month ago....I have an unfinished room deep in the bowels of my basement where gear gets cleaned and tried out. Brought it down, and it was immediately picking up stations with the dipole that other tuners that are well regarded on fmtunerinfo couldn't get at all. It pulled them in with signal strength of like 4/5...AND it sounds great to boot. I was looking on the advice of delihaus and he certainly has experienced enough fine gear that I take his word on the truly great pieces and I agree w/ him 100% on this one. I kept it in the basement in that system because I then only need a dipole and won't have to goof around with anything stronger.

regarding price, I know where one was as of a week ago for a nice price, it was either in CL vermont or NH....not sure if it's still out there. I almost bought a 2nd one but lucked into a yamaha t-85 for a nice deal instead.

Life's too short to be d*cking around with crappy gear. Get yourself the Sansui and pay $200 for it if you can't talk the guy down. You get to look at it, touch it, smell it, and feel it prior to purchase. There's alot to be said for that.

I'm dealing with a seller and he has not written me back with some questions I need to know other than its been his all this time and in mint shape. I think he's an older man and can't answer things about center tuning etc...
Looks new:yes:
so torn. :tears:

go for it! If you find it is not quite up to your expectations, send it to PunkerX for alignment. Then you know what you have, a great solid tuner

I found a clean one for $20 awhile back and it does a very good job.The downside is the crappy content on FM around here.It rarely gets used.
