TU-717 I like this tuner -Thoughts Please?!

The 717 seems to be getting more expensive of late. Its correct, every week there is yet another "hardly used" 717 on the auction and recently the buying prices have jumped.

I think its good advice to watch for the right combination of condition and price before just taking one. I really have no use for the rack handles so thats a non issue. Fully functional -Yes! Still looking...:smoke:

Buy it with the handles anyway, if you can. You can probably resell them separately for more than the delta in price you paid to get them with the tuner, which lowers your final cost. I wouldn't advocate that normally since I like keeping key accessories for any component I own but getting another pair later if you changed your mind would be easy, just a question of cost.

Well guys I managed to win a 717 this morning for less than 200 very pleased it is in beautiful condition and well cared for. I am really looking forward to having it. Now I need to do all the homework on the mods and tuning I may need. Very Cool!

Thanks everyone I am really excited about it!

Nice! Good to see your patience rewarded... it's a really nice tuna, I'm sure you'll love it.

When I clicked on the link, I almost expected to see that you had won the AU-717/TU-717 stack that just went for $195 local pick-up. Someone has the bananas lined up for that deal!

Yeah I'm excited about it. Patience I need to work on.

The guy with that stack for sale should have lived on my street! What a deal still I made out I think. This is fun.

Congrats.

After all the fretting about which x17, I think you made the best choice that won't have you 2nd guessing too much.

Congratulations and good luck.

If the tuner is being shipped to you by an Ebay'er -- make sure that they know how to properly pack and ship vintage gear, i.e. not drop it in a pet food box with loose foam peanuts poured on top.

It seems like alot of classic vintage gear is destroyed because people don't know how to properly pack to isolate the unit in solid foam/survive drops/etc.

You are so right. Well...

He's a furniture guy and has all the packing right where he works. It's going to be completely cushioned and isolated from whatever may happen along the way. I am quite confident and cannot afford to worry much more. :sigh:

Yeah I like to seek advice. Everyone seems to know better on so many things and I try to learn. Research.

Tu-717

Here it is and it arrived overpacked and without a single problem. Not always the case these days. Well I have to say its the very best sounding tuner I have. Beautiful clear voicing and seems quite sensitive on this rainy night.

I am just getting aquainted with her so the best I can say so far is this tuner is all I hoped for and then some. The sound is very open and room filling with a sense of charm almost as if it wants to play music for me. I know that sounds funny but there is some real presence in the sound that is very natural. The bass is clear and where it should be. The highs are relaxing and without the fatigue often heard from most tuners straining to capture the signal.

I don't know what more to say except it sounds awesome. Thanks for pushing me along guys.

I took this pic in low light I don't think the white balance is right there is no green on that dialface except the LED. Probably more a cream color to me here.

Yeah, I thought the scale looked a little greener than it should...

I think most will agree that the TU-717 is easy on the eyes and the ears

It arrived just in time. Now you have the whole weekend to play with it

Thanks for the update.

Been looking forward to delivery and hoping it arrived safely.

Looks great from the pic.

Glad to hear the glowing review ... :thmbsp:

Here it is ........

From what i can remember it's a really good tuner , with a good sound, allthough a little bit to the bright side, much like the sound that came form the tuner i myself had in the early 80' - a Technics ST-8080

Allways liked those no_nonsense tuners ...... today i use a Accuphase T-101 - beat's allmost everything, if antenna conditions are in order

I would think anything over two hundred bananas is too much.Only because they seem to be everywhere.Very nice tuner though.I have one that came from a thrift.

Glad to hear it arrived safely, I was also watching and hoping for good packing so we wouldn't lose another fine vintage piece.

Glad you're enjoying it. I have to say that I'm not surprised to read your impressions of a Sansui TU-717. I think they're keepers. :thmbsp:

Your camera isn't that much wrong: The bulbs that light the dail have a colored plastic "cover" that looks a bit blue-isch on power-off but if lit shine a green-isch colour. I have used my TU717 with original bulbs to "match" a TU517 that came without the colored plastic "covers" and no bulbs. It was a PIA without the "covers" and eventually I used reflection green tape on stratigic positions to get the match with the original lighted TU717. Unfortunally the generic bulbs burned out very quickly and after that I did a LED conversion on the TU517 (green LEDs, looks great but not nearly as great as the original intended lighting).
