TU-9900 stereo indicator

Hi Kev,

Thanks for the reply. I decided to jump in and have a Sencor SG-165 and an HP 8657A on the way! Would like to get a Keithley 2015, but they are quite expensive. We'll see.

I'm just wondering if there a some things I could try before I am able to make some real measurements, which might be a while as I learn alignment skills...

I described the issue to the local tech (who doesn't do tuner alignments since he doesn't have the necessary instruments), and he said once in a while it is a bad capacitor causing no stereo, so thought I'd ask about that.
 
Hi Rick, yes that would be normal operation.
Keith is wondering why he only gets FM STEREO when the calibration function is in operation.

I haven't had a chance to study the circuit yet, I will get to it though....

I am still standing by my original assessment that it needs aligning, Discriminator and or IF issues I am thinking.

You really need a Multiplex gen and RF gen to properly assess what is going on...
By the way, there is no facility in the SM for adjusting the IF circuit. Says it is unnecessary:

Thats fine if nobody has got the great "golden tweaker" in there, as for the TU9900 I worked on, the IF was most certainly off as someone had been fiddling.
The SM is assuming its only been worked on by techs referencing the SM, however these days with all the time past and the amount of "experts" and "DIY'ers" fiddling about, you never know what might have been going on in there....
 
The discriminator zero does not require a RF SG, only a DMM.
This is the problem with Sansui adj instructions, since they only tell of one way to tune it up using there genescope thing

Where do they say to adj VR01 (discriminator zero) on F-2525?

T01 on F2525 requires peaking

T02 on F2525 requires linearity adj for min THD, supply 75KHz mono, monitor at det o/p jack.

I'm not any good at a tuner schematic, so I'll have to wait for you to wade in on that...

There is no logical explanation as to why the Stereo Light seems to operate in Calibration mode, there is nothing this switch does except mute the audio output and turn on its oscillator....
I would have to have this on my bench to properly diagnose whats going on, otherwise its just guessing....

It's still very likely to be something slightly out of alignment, but you could go through and replace some of the components they list as possible causes in the SM, nothing to lose, you might get lucky....

In Calibration mode all tuner functions seem to work, including both signal meters and the stereo indicator light, and all the normal stereo stations can be tuned in according to the indicators. If you have time to look at the circuit and can suggest something, I'd be grateful. I did measure voltages on TR608 and 609, and they match those indicated on the schematic, so I'm not seeing anything strange there. I've already tried adjusting VR603, and cleaned the switches as best I can with Deoxit. No change at this point.

I think in some way the oscillator for the calibration circuit is influencing or loading part of the Multiplex circuit down when its activated, in theory it should have no effect at all on it.
I tell ya, it needs aligning, just a little voice in my head after aligning, repairing and servicing many many tuners....

OK, understood. Will be able to take a look at the alignment in the next week. Do I need to build the "Detector Probe Block" shown in the SM to go between the tuner RCA out jacks and the oscilloscope? They are also showing a 100 pF capacitor between the signal generator and TP 1. I will have to look around to see if I have that or can easily get one.

You need to forget about the procedure in the SM, that will only work with a Genescope.

I use hybrid methods, Pioneer have really good procedures, as they were obviously realistic about what test gear most shops would have, so I have combined their methods into most of the tuners I work on...Sansui expected every shop to go out and buy one of these annoying Genescope things, PIA!!

You can use the visual method for the IF, but in order to do that its imperative to have visual markers for the peak of the 10.7mhz IF frequency and usually 200khz each side of 10.7mhz. I think the SG165 has a 10.7mhz sweep with markers, but you have to use that function with respect to the instructions in the SG165 manual otherwise you wont see them and then its all guess work.

I use a wide-band noise source and my Spectrum analyser to do IF visually because the SG165 doesn't work with some tuners and its fiddly as hell to set up, although I have used it a few times, its just really time consuming, I need to be able to do it quicker as I am on the clock. Plus on the Spectrum analyser I can read the amount of level through the IF in dbm so its easy to peak it out.

If you are wanting to do visual, yes you need a proper detector probe, that is not specific to Sansui, it changes the signal into a variable signal which can be displayed on a scope, and yes to inject the sweep into the IF stage you need a DC blocking capacitor, ceramic is best.

Its always best to have the scope connected to the REC OUT so you can observe the Audio signal, and this is where I also have the Distortion analyser connected and the VTVM, this way you can peak out the various stages and confirm its correct with minimum THD+N.

The Detector out is used for visually aligning the Discriminator, but thats a load of hoopla to make that work, so again, Peaking and Min THD+N, you can use a DMM to set the offset to 0mVDC as well, but the Distortion analyser is also a powerful tool here....

This is what I find on the tuners I do.
>IF is always pretty close UNLESS someone has had the great golden tweaker in there, so I always check the IF for that, back in the day, only qualified techs would have been in there, but these days in the world of DIY who knows whats been done to it.

Great, Kev, thanks for all of that information! The Sencore SG-165 came today. As you stated, there are slightly different instructions in the manual than in the manuals for the receivers/tuners for alignment. One thing I'm wondering, there is no mention of the ceramic capacitor for the input signal or the detector circuit for output. However, it does state to use the probes that came with the Sencore: use the 39G43 for the out put signal to the TP on the tuner, and use the 39G45 to connect from the output test point on the tuner to the input of the SG-165. Do these two Sencore probes replace the input/output connectors stipulated for the Genescope in the Sansui manuals? If that is the case, then looks like I just need to connect the "to scope" RCA jack on the Sencore to my oscilloscope to see the sweep signal for IF and discriminator adjustment.

Also, the SG-165 manual has three procedures for FM IF alignment, one for mono tuners, one for stereo, and one for stereo tuners with crystal filters. I assume the '70s gear is the latter of the three?
 
That CAL switch S6 is an important clue. It disables the muting circuit so it could very well be that if it's switched off the muting is always disabling the stereo via Q610. Try adjusting VR604, this controls the level that muting gets dropped and stereo comes on.

This was along the lines that I was thinking too - that some how the muting was always “off” which disables stereo. Will give VR604 a try this morning.

I did observe that with Calibration “on” I get stereo light indication on strong stations, but when I also push in the muting button no stereo light.

Another observation, when I jumpered the left center pin and pin 2 on the muting switch, I do get stereo, just no muting.

Like I said the unit needs a thorough alignment, which includes adjusting the muting threshold etc etc.......

Once you blow through the whole process I think you'll find it will work perfectly.

I know you want to find out what is causing this particular issue, but I find in my tuner work that if you align, in most cases, a lot of these niggly sort of issues will be resolved.
Any other issues that don't wash out in the alignment then require further investigation.

Well, as it happens, I have a G9700 on my bench at the moment which has a similar problem, and I can tell you tracing this fault has been driving me nuts!!
Some faults on tuners are so very difficult, especially these hybrid analogue/digital tuners Sansui put in the GX700 series.....I will succeed though, I always do!!

If I have time I will have a closer look at the schematic for the TU9900, I have to try and find a clearer copy as the one I have is not very legible....

I don't know if you have some Pioneers available, but they are very easy tuners to align, and they often have very good instructions too...
 
I do have a Kenwood KR-3200 I am going to try first. I got that one for free. No Pioneers at the moment, maybe something will turn up.

The TU-9900 is playing beautifully with the muting switch (S5) jumpered between center and pin 2 on the left side. Pin 2 connects to pin 1 of S3, to pin 5 of the FM discriminator board (F-2525), and to pin 19 on the MPX board (F-2526). So, something in those circuits is being activated to give stereo output that is not active without the jumper...

Agree the schematic in the SM (if that is what you have) is not very clear. Does not make things easier.
