Tube amp for JBL Apollo C51's?

Sherwood S 5000 II? 7868s ... I had a really nice one with the matching stereo tuner and that set sounded way better than it had a right to. These can be had well within your budget, restored even. The mechanical package isn't much to write home about and the knobs are all plastic.
 
alright I'll keep my eye's peeled. gotta admit at first I really planned to selling these. they were listed as vintage jbl speakers and I grew up around jbl speakers so I knew that some could be valuable. once I found out what they were I was even more excited and in talking to the guy, he got them from an old theater and his wife had finally had enough of em, I'd be willing to bet he never had them hooked up to a proper amp and after hearing them I don't think I can give them up. spent 2 hrs last night listing to music and all of it felt like it was the first time "hearing" it. I dunno, simply amazing.
 
any other suggestions? after I sell my current speakers I'll have a little more money to spend, how do you think the st-70 will sound on these? or is there a better "budget" tube amp. would like to get a list together so that I have a bit more options and I might spot another good deal like the speakers.
 
Wow! Those are an amazing find. I was at an estate sale a month ago where the drivers, without cabinets, sold for $1250 within 5 minutes of the door opening.
 
Ya that's a smoking deal you got there,vintage desirable and excellent performers with tube amps.I had a pair with the 130a -15 inch woofers and DLH 175 horns,early drivers 1955 I think.problem was they were mono system speakers and the speaker cabinets didn't match so let them go.I ran them with my Fisher 50A monoblocks and they sounded superb.Really opened my eyes at the time just how good a 2-way speaker can sound.
I also ran them with a Dynaco st70 and Dynaco mkiv monoblocks as well.If you got the coin id put vintage tube mono-block on those {huge fan}

I was planning on selling these when I originally picked them up, but after hearing them I can't. I'm afraid if I sell them I'll never find them again, I've never heard speakers this good.

what would be the pros/cons of a stereo tube vs 2 monoblocks?
 
I just like the dynamics/separation and punch I get from mono amps.There are tho's out there that will question that assertion but im a believer speaking from experience with numerous mono amp system and single chassis 2 channel tube amps.I also failed to mention I had Heathkit w4am mono's as well but didn't have them on the JBL's.I ended up selling the horns{dlh175} to a dude from korea for stupid money.wish I had them back.
Your right about sellers remorse.You could go the next 30 yrs without ever finding another pair.The heritage aspect/rarity and performance should be considered before any such sale..

I'm not gunna lie but now I'm more then intrigued with running dual mono-blocks but man they are quite costly
 
McIntosh MC225 - frequently available for less than $2k.

McIntosh MC50s - SS but with a sonic signature reminiscent of the tube monos they replaced. Easily bought for less than $1k, restored even.

Dynaco MK IIIs ...
 
what would be considered a good or fair price the mk III"s, they seem pretty mod friendly and lots of places to buy parts from
 
A pair of rebuilt Dynaco MK3
mono's should be had for between 7-900.00.
My MKiv 's cost me 500.00 then I had to fully recap them.Both sets would sound awesome on your JBL's.{I wont mention how my Fisher 50a's sounded :}}
As Sam said the Fisher 70 boxcar mono's should be considered aswell...Fisher and JBL made for each other ....Period correct system late 50's its tasty stuff man.

alright well I'll keep an eye out, who knew that buying these would be such an investment. I was perfectly happy with my old system "was"
