Tube amp for JBL Apollo C51's?

If your used to Solid State gear I think when you get a good taste of vacuume tube amplification and efficient quality vintage speakers you'll not search any longer for "better sound".
My first tube amp was a dynaco st70 and ive never listened to SS since and sold all my keeper SS amps/preamps..For the last number of yrs since tubes I rarely look at accumulating anything these day,my systems are set now.
My main speakers on my Fisher 50a's are a vintage pair of Stephens Tru-sonic 3-ways in JBL like Sovereign type walnut cabinets.They do everything as well if not better than my old JBL c-34 001 loaded cabinets like you've got there.
My other speaker recommendation are the Stephen Tru-sonic FR=150 full rangers,they excel with tubes as well.Same vintage late 50's big 15 " FR mine are in large Tannoy cabinets.
That's the good stuff...

If you don't or can't listen at high volumes, the smaller Dynaco ST35/SCA35 as amp sections go are good, the ST70 may be better although I like the MkIV monoblocks personally, and the Mk. III has more balls to it. Back in the day, these would go for less than 2 bills but now think 2 to 4 times that much. So keep looking and saving, or maybe post a want ad in BT.

you know I just assumed the mark iii was lower then the mark iv. the mark iv might actually be a better option atm price wise. the dynaco st35 is 4-8ohm the speakers are 16ohm.
 
Even though the drivers are marked 16 ohm, the amp may see a different impedance through the crossover which is between the amp and the drivers. The LE85 compression driver will likely have a 16 ohm marking but may have an 8-12 ohm DC resistance in its voice coil. The ST35 could still probably drive these speakers as the efficiency of the speakers is pretty high.

As for Dynaco power ratings, the ST/SCA35 is 17w/ch, ST70 35w/ch, Mk. IV is roughly 40w mono, Mk. II is 50w mono, and the Mk. III is 60w mono. The rare Dynaco MK. VI is 120w mono IIRC.
 
these have the 130a 16ohm, 175dlh 16ohm and a n1200 network that supposedly 16ohm. i have not tested them so I'm 100% certain thats what they'll read but those are the specs that I found on lansing heritage

The original ST35 is 8-16 not 4-8. It would probably run your speakers just fine but it is a little light on power, maybe. You will pay a premium for MK4s and the performance differential between them and an ST70 is negligible. The MK3s have way more slam but in stock form I am not a fan of them over the the ST70. Of everything mentioned, the ST70 is a great starter with plenty of power for your speakers and they perform well in stock form. A few things will happen with it. You will like it just fine as is and go on about your life. You will will modify it to get even better performance. Or you will swap it for something farther up the food chain. If you decide to ditch it there will always be another buyer for it. The ST70 is probably the safest first tube amp purchase ever.
