That's the bar. Believe it or not, you were supposed to put a serving tray, ice bucket, and drinks in there. I believe the British called it a 'Drinks Cupboard'.

Funny thing about this console, when I turned it on, a station came in I have never heard, playing old album jazz. Really cool set the mood well. The turntable is not currently functional, and i'm certain there was a door over the bar section. I will probably get a glass door made, since there is no way to match the finish on the wood. There is also a lamp in the bar area I need to get working for full on swank factor.

I love my old three channel tube Moto console. My daughter thinks I'm crazy when I turn it on because it's in the same room as my main system and she thinks it sounds horrible in comparison. I've resisted the temptation to "upgrade" it and have decided to keep it stock.
There is occasionally something to be said about low or mid-fi. It doesn't do 20-20k, but usually it gives a nice warm midrange that is totally listenable without giving you enough frequency range to really find the flaws in the recording or the equipment. Its also great when you're listening to stuff that wasn't recorded super well to begin with. Ever listen to a 78 or rock 45's from the 50s and early 60s? They aren't that great, and if you play that stuff on a really high end set you'll want to rip your ears out.
