Tubes galore at surplus store

Gnesen

Super Member
I just stopped in at a local surplus store and they had an aisle with a lot of vacuum tubes for sale at one price each. I didn't have time to look closely, but didn't see any common output tubes at first glance. No idea if there are some NOS in there. My guess is most are useless for audio, however, there were several baskets with large tubes that I didn't recognize (see below). I only have one small tube amp that doesn't get much use, so the find isn't much use to me. Just thought I'd share.

Might be worth going the bins anyway. Any decent tube would be worth more than $2.50... The one in your hand seems to be either an 807 or 1625, and I see a bunch of them in the bin... Definitely worth $2.50...
Good luck...

All right. With a name like "Gnesen" I would have you pegged as a Duluthian:) But...that sure looks like Ax-Man stuff there. Have you moved???

I guess Axman Surplus is no special secret. :)

We moved down to the Twin Cities from Duluth at the end of last summer and I'm still learning all the cool places to go. One thing for certain is there are a lot more cherries to be picked from craigslist... though, there's a lot more chaff too.

Been through most of those, grabbed a few things but didn't see much left of the more common/good stuff. Hard to say how often it changes though.

Looks like they still had most of the 1625s left.

If one had a real knack for designing from scratch probably could come up with something. There's a bunch of bins of tubes at the University Ave. store too.

I saw a lot of those when they first got them, most of it was just odd voltage TV tubes, (at least that was what they sent to the Fridley store and St Paul store as I recall). But there were a few with potential if you wanted to take the time to go through them. Hopefully they changed their pricing structure otherwise they have been toting around some waaay overpriced tubes for TV's that they have not even tested. If they still have that 6DQ5 that lost it's seal- that was that way when I checked it in the late 1990's: you can tell how popular those other tubes were. Any of the real tubes with real potential likely got snapped up by the "Atmasphere" guys.
