When checking out an old tube tuner, do you follow the same precautions as with an old amp? Variac power up, etc..

I aquired an old Scott.

Hello,

Yep .. the power supply (Which is 90% of the part that smokes / blows up / catches on fire) is pretty much the same and as a result you use the same precautions.

+1 agree. Any piece of gear that has a transformer and caps requires the same startup procedure for testing. Variac(or a DBT if no variac) and slow ramp up to keep parts from overheating and spewing their guts all over for testing.

Like a car with a carburetor and manual choke, you just can't turn the key. You have to prime the intake (pump the pedal once or twice) and maintain a rich mixture (pull on the choke somewhat) to keep it running until it warms up.

Injected/computerized cars just turn the key. The computer takes care of the mixture control.
