Tuners?

I have a Sangean HDT-20 in the original box in storage. I used a few times but found it weird in it's operation. For the occasional FM listening, streaming from iHeart or TuneIn is easier and better for me.

i suggest getting a grace-link internet tuner, and feeding its digital output to an outboard dac. the sq is great, especially w/higher bitrate feeds, when fed from the digital out into a dac. you can easily hear the difference between quality and not-so-quality recordings.

and since discovering fip.fr, my vast software collection usually sit idle, unless i'm in the mood for something specific. (which can occasionally get triggered by something i heard fip play. it saves its playlist for 30 days, and you can pull up on your fone or tablet what's playing, and what's been playing)

fip's hi bitrate feed (fip also has hi bitrate genre specific feeds as well, for just about everything except classical; but the eclectic feed includes classical music):

and yes, i have a pretty hi-rez set-up. ;)

I read where the HD decoder in HDT-20 was a big step up from other decoders. Mine is now in the attic.
My original and later version DaySequerra tuners sound much better. The original was a 4,000.00 unit. The market must not have supported that, the later had a few corners cut to save maybe a 100.00 and price was half.
No longer use a dac with AES input, a Canare impedance transformer converts AES to coax.
Luckily we have an awesome local IMG_0716.jpegIMG_0715.jpegstation here that has great programming. That is KPFT. The three HD feeds are all worthwhile. The 90.1 HD3 is all music. Classic Country is name and sez it all.
They have bumped internet bitrate but still in dark ages for this. They need to offer a FLAC codec stream. The over air HD3 feed is way better sounding than the internet stream now.

I've been experimenting with an Eico MX-99 decoder based on the enthusiasm of a long-deceased member here. Despite new output caps, I am not yet impressed. I still have some sources and adjustments to try. My Eico Classic Series 2200 was a flawed but charming tuner. I've got a spare 2200 in storage; maybe I'll get that one refurbished.

Love the nautical look of that Sansui!
For me if I had to pick

I still miss my Pioneer TX-7100, 8100 and 9100 tuners. Like all Pioneer X1000 series components are till my favorite Pioneer gear of all time. Having said that; great collection of tuners you got there!

As of today I finally got a dedicated tuner separate, which got just now delivered to my doorstep. Purchased buy now as is not working or for parts.

Being the just now delivered at my doorstep Philips 22AH105 tuner which was the advised and intended Philips add-on tuner separate for my Philips 22AH308 integrated amplifier.

I earlier mentioned it to be a Radiola version of this tuner; but I was obviously confused. It is the more desirable to me Philips model.

Due to the old style not grounded plug , I can't plug it in the modern outlet.
So first change the plug and clean the filthy / junked / neglected tuner .

Update in the Philips 22AH105 tuner.

I hooked it up to the aux of my 22AH708 receiver again to let it play for a few days to see if there still are, or other (new) problems.

FM reception performed intermittent. Like disappearing cut out left or right channel or signal at all. On FM only that was.
But that turned out to be easy fix. Bad solder most foremost. And now it is reliable so it looks like at least :dunno:
Reception and sound quality are top notch by the way.

I did also some troubleshooting regarding the lights. But is indeed just burned out bulbs. I do have them. But that's work for another day.
All LEDs are working, despite the seller stating in the listing, most LEDs were out.

Preset memory 100% working digital digits bright as should. Seller stated they were dim!

Removed some flux residue still on the circuit board from earlier repairs / replaced IC's. And I did some fresh solder reflowing here and there.

Controls are still a little scratchy. I haven't tried to spray them or remove and clean them yet. Also that is for another day.

For cosmetics; I did clean the inside and outside of the chassis and wood cover, but not the faceplate, knobs and glass yet.
But the tuner looks already a lot better.

The tuner is 'singing' like a dream for more than 9 hours now. Hence 'fingers crossed'!

i bought one of these when i lived in riga latvia for a year. it was a nice tuner, certainly. then, tuner whore that i am, i just had to try a uher eg751 that was available at a good price. it's in a completely different league, sonically. up there w/the hairy beast. uh, i mean very best. ;) but, i understand the desire to have a matching set of gear.

I've had a new-in-box Technics ST-8080 for many years now, maybe over 30 years at this point. I've been determined to not use it until I have a matching SU-8080 amp to use it with, but the chance of finding anything close to as nice, might be zero by now.
