Well, I'm 4 coats into now, and just barely starting to get some depth. I've got at least 4 more to go, and possibly many more. I got a little "glare" this morning when the Missus tripped on the plastic sheeting under them and spilled her coffee. Thank goodness it was her "second" cup.

Thank God she didn't spill any on the speakers!!

It really is Ken, and by adding the shelf and moving the cabs forward to clear it, I got them another ~3 feet apart. That doesn't sound like much, but it sure looks like a lot. I'm hoping to get them fired up this weekend for a trial run. I'm going to try and devote a couple hours to fine tuning the placement like you showed me. If I can get them to image for me, and a little "air" up top, I'll be happy as a pig in ****.:thmbsp:

Yep, I think I even remember getting a "stacking" variance from you when I got the 511s. BTW, I haven't had a chance to fool with the TXs yet, but it's first up after the mini-fest.:yes:

Maybe the TX's could be used for those Conn mono's that you might be seeing (Note Conn 6l6 mono thread) If the Conns do in fact have high end bandwidth limitations, they might be an interesting output TX upgrade if they are the real deal :scratch2:

I don't expect that you'll find the Conn's having high freq bandwidth limitations, I recall reading about someone selling their MC30s after listening to Conns a few years back.

I did speak with Jef from Abraxas regarding the Webster/Hammond amps. Here is a blurb from one of our emails.

I am running mine all stock tubes.
I use a line stage with a gain of 3 (actually about 2.7).
(I'll be selling this line stage in a few months as well as the amps.
I just have too many amps.)

Most of the mod I did on mine involved updating components, and tighter tolerances.
I also upgraded the power supply without trying to over-kill. Keep it simple.
I added a dual circuit so I could run it as a triode connected output stage if I felt the mood.
Turns out I like the 6V6 as a pentode anyway. Don't understand why we don't hear more
of this nice sounding tube.

Lots of good things to say about these nice sounding output trannys as well.
It's all there, but laid back and easy to listen to forever.
It feels more like you get the inner workings of the sound, rather than an in-your-face kinda thing.

Everthing I have read about these being modified incorporates the triode rewiring and output tx upgrade but it sounds to me like Jef was pretty pleased with the sound of them as is.

No sweat man, I love talking about amps too.:yes: I remember when I was first getting into tube audio. I had done a recap or something and thought I knew it all. Someone somewhere posted something about some Conn organ jobs. Well, I had been researching an old piece of crap Hammond amp and found out the outputs were very limited on bandwidth. So my dumb ass posts back to the guy that organ amps are no good for Hi-Fi.:sigh: I'll never forget the responses I got to that one. I guess we live and learn (hopefully). I keep wanting to add a triode switch to a Dynaco ST35 that I built, but to be honest, everyone I know that has a triode / pentode switchable amp prefers pentode.:scratch2: I thought for sure it would be the other way around but not so IME. I think I still have to try it though just for the fact that I love SET so much. I guess PP triode is totally different.

Inside of the Urbans I'm putting Heresies which should look like bookshelf speakers. I get a hell of a kick out of this hobby.:thmbsp:

I'm not sure Ron, but they are 7 foot horns if you could "unfold" them. The way I understand it is they absolutely have to be that large to get down to lowest frequency. Something to do with physics. My motto is, I don't have to be smart, just know some smart people.:yes: The way they work is like this; from about 125Hz and up, they are a direct 15inch radiator, and from 125Hz on down (and I'm not sure how low they actually go) is where the 7 foot folded horn comes into play. At least that's what I was told. I have the cutoff at 500Hz where the 511s take over. It seems weird to me that 1 watt of power can move all those big motors enough to make music, and 5 or 6 watts will run you clean out of the room. I was gonna hook up a 100 a channel sand amp once just for kicks, but I decided not to.

You spotted that little dude huh, it's a Vista Audio i82 and uses four PCL82 tubes. That tube is actually two in one, a triode and a pentode together in one bottle (kinda like a 6BM8 that is so popular in Japan). It's been owned by a couple different AK'ers and now it's my turn. It's got just a slight hum in one channel that doesn't really hurt anything that I'll track down someday, but it sounds absolutely fantastic on the Heresies. I haven't delved into the circuit yet, but I "think" it's parallel single ended.:scratch2:

Well thank you very much Terry. Praise is always best when it comes from someone you have a deep respect for, as I do you. Really though, most of the credit should go to all the folks here at AK who explained step by step to me how to do this stuff. I just did the dirty work.

Ron, I had my wife calculate the volume of the boxes and she came up with 12.3 cubic feet. I think we're going to take one each to bury us in, I just hope I go first so I don't have to do the mono thing. Hmmm:scratch2: On second thought, I hear a lot of good stuff about mono.

Ken, The shelf is doing great. I built it from a 1X12 and a 1X6 poplar board joined together with a shiplap joint. It also has some external bracing on the bottom. It has supports on each end, and the two center supports are held onto the 2X6 wall studs with 3X5/16 lag bolts.:yes: After I built it, I sat my fat butt on it for a test and figured it was good to go. I'm not 100% sure about that one amp I showed you though (the one with all the iron top and bottom).
