Turning a receiver on and off by plugging it in question

My 1990 Pioneer stereo receiver SX-2600 power switch may be going out. If I left the power switch in the on position and powered it on and off by plugging the power cord in would it hurt anything?

The problem is the switch is already damaged and you are taking a chance utilizing the switch mechanism. Bypass the switch with a jumper so power no longer goes through the switch. After that is done, you are safe to use the power strip.
 
I had a Kenwood KR7600 that had a great sound, but the on/off toggle would not turn the unit off. I used the powerstrip method mentioned and never had a problem after many years of excellent sound I turned it over to my son-in-law and he still has it.
 
I had an SX650 with the dreaded power switch problem. I tried leaving it on and using a power strip, but it didn't make any difference. The switch had already arc'ed so badly that it would do it anyway. Just killing the power and turning it back on, with the switch on the power strip, would make it arc again and eventually it would burn itself a new set of contacts and quit sizzling and the lights would quit flickering and go on solid. I quit using it. Seemed dangerous.

I read about cleaning the switch, there's a thread here somewhere about it, but a guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse knowing full well the switch issue, so I never did it.

ive been using power strips with a few of my receivers for years with no issues, a few receivers have the power/volume combo switch and would be very hard to find a replacement for so i dont want to take any chances with them and a few that i use a lot i dont want to wear out. I like power strips with my tube stuff because i use fans and i can turn them off and on together.
