TurnTable for this system...where do i go from here ?

Who's Chopper is this ?
This is my Main System.

- Marantz 2270 fully bebuilt professionally. Wood case (mint)
- Marantz 5220 Cass Deck. Wood case (mint)
- Emotiva xda-2 DAC
- Apple Mini for Digital Music (jriver)
- Altec Lansing Monitor 14s rebuilt crossovers and Woofers
- Marantz 6100 Turntable w/Shure V15 Type III cart.
- DIY White Lightning Interconnects and Speaker wires.


#Room treatments are minimum with first reflections addressed. I wont be doing more that that presently since the room and wife aren't on board with more than I have.

I love the vintage setup and wonder where I go from here regarding a Turntable to max out the system.
- Do I stay with Marantz and Vintage and go with a 6300 ?
- Stay with Marantz and go Modern with a Marantz 15S1 ?
- Stay Vintage and go with a Vintage TT such as a thorens 124 or similar ?
- Go Modern with something other than Marantz ?
- Simply upgrade the Cart ? However I think this cart pretty much maxes out a 6100.

All suggestions are helpful. I would say my budget would be around $1500 incuding Cart.

AFAIK, your current turntable will blow the doors off of anything currently available in your budget range, with the *possible* exception of the Reloop RP-7000, which no one in hi-fi circles has apparently tested yet.

It will provide the most bang for your buck. There's certainly nothing at all wrong with a 6100.

Personally, I'd stay with the 6100 and throw myself into a moving coil Denon and a good preamp, and keep an eye out for a nice 6300. Or a Thorens. :D
 
Nice setup with a really nice cart to utilize.
I wouldn't move to the 6300. They are beautiful but over-inflated for the money. I doubt the move from a 6100 to a 6300 would be worth it, especially with costs for these badged tables being where they are.

I would be looking at a TD124/125/150/160 if i were in your shoes.
 
I run my 6300 with a Denon DL-103 and Denon SUT. I am really pleased with the way the Denon and 6300 seem to like each other. I believe the 6100 arm is also of similar mass and would work well with the DL-103.

I got my 6300 for around $300 a few years ago, just before they exploded in price. It needed a full restoration but I do dig it. Decent ones now seem to be going for $700+ on ebay, so probably not worth it.
 
I would say the 6300 is almost the same as the 6100 from a SQ perspective.

The V15-III is nice, especially with Jico SAS but a better match for the medium mass arm is a MC. Lower cost option is Denon DL 110 (HOMC) ... more dollars will get you DL 103 plus SUT or phono stage.

If you go with a new table you need to spend quite a bit more $$$ than if you go with a vintage TD 160 or AR XA/XB. If you like tweaking these are great tables to get.

This is indeed a nice combo but finding a 6300 for a reasonable price is hard to do. The 6100 is close enough.
 
ok so some food for thought so far.

Questions:
I was under the impression that the Marantz 15s1 was a top notch TT setup and well worth the price range especially considering the cartridge it comes with.

I see a big difference in cost between the TD 124 and TD125 almost 2x the cost for the 124. what is the big difference ? is it worth the $1000 + for the 124?

Yea the 6300 seems to hold premium prices. What would be considered reasonable at this point ?

So is there a big jump from the Marantz tables to the Thorens ? I have heard a TD124 and thought it sounded great.

Do I keep the /Shure V15 Type III and move it over to either a 6300 or Thorens or sell it with the 6100 or seperatly ? I don't know much about moving coil carts so ill do some investigating on that.

That's all anyone needs to see. I'll also add that I'm going to stand firm on this. Just because modern reviewers, who weren't even alive when the 6100 was made, think that the new slew of gear is all that and a can of Pabst doesn't magically nullify scientific measurement. In other words, they don't know any better. Plus, they're paid to give favorable reviews to advertiser's equipment.

The fact is, the Marantz 6100 (and Marantz probably has never made their own turntables, the 6100 is probably a CEC) holds speed much better than the Marantz (probably a Hanpin) 15S1.

That's my reasoning. If you happen to own a 15S1 and want to get your undies in a bundle over this, well, that's your prerogative, but facts are facts, and science is science, no matter how popular it has become to bash science and facts in favor of pure bullshit.

I see the Denon dl-103r is about $230 on ebay. There is also a 103 without the r for cheaper around $190.

So adding this cart to the 6100 would be a worthwhile upgrade over the /Shure V15 Type III ? do people trade carts ?

What is a SUT ? sorry
So an upgrade of the phono stage would be a good idea ? I have never even considered going that route. Would anyone have suggestions ?

Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate all the help. I really love this system and I work a lot of weird hrs where im home alone while kids and wife are at school/work. so my free time is spent enjoying listening to music.

The TD124 & TD125 are very different turntables. Lots of research to dig into there.

No idea what a deal on a 6300 would be at this point. Probably should send it over to D&S. I never see them go locally. The bay is an unfortunate barometer for both the 124 & 6300 to say the least. Crazy prices.

I would say there is a big quality jump up to any of the Thorens tables mentioned if properly setup. If you go this route, I'd hold onto the Shure, at least until trying it with a new stylus.

It's actually manufactured by Clearaudio, not Hanpin.

Hey dusty... I appreciate the info.. really, its something I will take into consideration.
Personally I would like to keep my main system Vintage regarding the Main components.. yea I know the emotiva/mac mini and possibly a phono stage aren't vintage.

My concerns are that I understand that the 2270 isnt the end all be all top end system.. however I love it and I don't see myself in the near future moving away from it. I also love my altec 14s.
So basically im at a point where I would like to seek the top level of this system... however I know there are limitations to it and don't want to spend money on things that wont make much of a difference. I have 2 in college and 1 getting married, so while I do have some hobby money to spend, I want to avoid making huge mistakes.

I don't need to hear one. My ears are not sensitive, scientific measurement devices. I haven't seen one, or touched one, or know what color it is, either. All irrelevant.

The reason that specs are given and that specs are compared is because our ears are *not* scientific measuring devices, and some people can hear things that others can't. If you can't hear 0.2% wow and flutter, then lucky you, but there are people that can.

It's always the same...the "Have you heard one" argument. The POINT of hi fi is to NOT hear one. It shouldn't impart any sort of coloration or distortion of the sound. Again, why we take measurements and compare.

If you own one and enjoy it, great. That doesn't change science. It is what it is.

For better or worse, most components can imprint a sonic character to the signals passed. Particularly true of electromechanical components with time base mechanisms or transductional function.
