Tweeter for Design Acoustics PS-10

Hello,

I need some help as I am new to this field. I recently bought a pair of Design Acoustics PS-10 and I successfully refoamed the woofers. When I connected them I realized that there was no sound coming from the right tweeter. Since I do not know how to troubleshoot this issue I am thinking of replacing it.

Can someone send me the model I need to buy or a link to a web site perhaps?

If you haven't done it yet, try swapping tweeters between speakers to make sure it's the tweeter and not the l-pad level control (if so configured) or a crossover problem. If problem moves- then yes, tweeter is bad. If it is a bad tweeter, consider a good, working, used tweeter from that auction (ebay) site. That's what I did to replace a degraded tweeter in one of my PS-10's. You may be able to match with a different manufacturer's tweeter, but fit up and balance between the two channels might not be a good match. Then again, the early models do have a l-pad adjustment for the tweeter level, so you could adjust for a good balance in HF that way with a different brand tweeter.
 
^^^Agree, get an original off fleabay, if in fact the tweeter is bad. They are pretty east to get.
Is the tweeter adjustment pot on the front baffle, or on the back, or the later toggle switch? They may need a dose of deoxit.
 
Go to Harbor Freight and get a $5-$10 multimeter and check the resistance of the tweeter (disconnected from the crossover). Or, disconnect it and touch a 1.5V battery to the terminals. You should hear a click. If you don't it's got an open voice coil and will have to be replaced.

"check the resistance of the tweeter". How do I do that with the multimeter? I got one but don't know how to use it.
 
Resistance - Disconnect the tweeter. Attach the leads (or touch if no clips) from the multi meter, one to each post of the tweeter. Use the ohm measurement setting and see what value it gives you. If you get 0, it's bad.

As for the adjustment on the back, toggle, jiggle, rotate while playing some music to see if the tweeter pops to life at all.

To be more useful, just jiggle the hell out of the switch, if there's a switch. Or turn the hell out of the dial, if there's a dial. Do it a bunch, 30 or so times all the way in each direction. The tweeter may magically come back to life, or at least make noise. If you hear noise at all, chances are the contacts (how the signal moves through the switch or POTentiometer) are just dirty. If you get lucky and this is the case, report back and we'll talk you through that.

If this doesn't work, do as Tox says and get a $5 multimeter at Harbor Freight. I got one for free with a coupon, but I had to buy a screwdriver. The cheapo one will work well enough for this. But first, get to jiggling or turning!

I don't see any on eBay right now, but a little Googlin' says the part number is P10153. Looks like it'll be around $20 when it does show up.
 
SeattleMan- Check out the Yahoo Design Acoustics Users Group. There is a TON of info and photos on that site and some helpful members for questions and such. You may want to become a member so you can post questions there too. I'm pretty sure there are photos of the PS-10 tweeters in that board. I've found some members have some used parts available too. Sometimes it takes a day or two for members to reply if they aren't visiting the message board frequently.

So if you want to put a non-OEM tweeter in the speaker(s), a soft dome 1" tweeter would be a possible start. The 90 dB/W sensitivity is a clue for output. From the Yahoo group I concur with tyella that the OEM part number is P10153 (772TNV). Let us know if you need mechanical details for the tweeter mounting. I happen to have my PS-10s in the living room system right now. I still would recommend an original DA tweeter if you can wait for one to show up on the auction site.
 
Just checking again if someone can advise. My understanding is that the recommendation is to put an original DA tweeter, however nobody can tell when one will become available. What are my options:

1. If I went for a non original DA tweeter, which model shall I choose? I will appreciate some links or confirmation if this one would work (http://www.simplyspeakers.com/replacement-speaker-tweeter-t-145.html)
2. If I am going to replace the working one and get two new ones (is this a good idea?), what shall I choose?

It appears none of us have an instant answer for which of the hundreds of tweeters available today will be a close match for yours. But, folks are making suggestions here.

?? This was an offer for a free one if you could post a pic of yours.

It was also suggested to check out the Design Acoustics user's group. Someone over there may already have identified a good replacement.

Finally, the specs were posted so you can look for a tweeter of the right overall diameter with a 1" soft dome, 8 ohms, and about 90 db/W sensitivity, that goes down to at least 2000 Hz on its range. The one you posted from Simply Speakers says its lower end is 3500 Hz so it may not be a good replacement, unless someone has actually used it and says it works (cue Yahoo user's group). Places like Parts Express and Madisound have tweeters. Parts Express has ten 1" soft dome 8 ohm tweeters you can look through.
