In reading through this thread and as I am somewhat of a noob at this 2 track/4 track reel to reel along with age and brand of tape and time of recording.......it sounds to me that the ideal setup for decks would have to be 2 & 4 track machines that would be used to properly play back all recordings.
I am posting this as I have recently become involved with the maintenance & care of the decks at an institution along with the clean up of some digitized audio files and I would like to know. Thanks for any help offered.

Some decks did in fact come with both 2 (half) and 4 (quarter) track stereo heads (My Sony TC766-2 does).
However, in practise, unless you're dubbing some source tape that is really 'hi fi', you can get away with a quarter track setup for 2 track tapes. As has been said you may need to tweak the levels a bit to even things out.

Yep, that's the deck. I traded my "engineering services" for my machine with a friend who was one of the voice over announcers at TBS. I built him some custom audio metering for his home VO studio, and he offered his brand new Tascam 32 in exchange. It was his spare deck, and he had never used it. The only time it had been out of the box was when I set both of his decks up for Ampex 456, which was what we used at TBS.

If you ever watched an Atlanta Braves game on TBS, you heard Jim's voice at the beginning, saying things like, "Brought to you by Toyota", or some other sponsor. Of course, he did a lot of other stuff as well.
