Ugliest Receiver Made

My vote goes to:

The Kenwood KR-1000 Galaxy Commander. So damn ugly I have to resurrect it. Has blown outputs. Under the knife as we speak.

That's funny; as soon as I saw the thread title the galaxy commander came to mind first. That would get my vote.

There was a lot of gear with that same look made around then, I noticed that piece dosen't have all the sliders like Tehcnics used.

And it lives! You have to unsolder all the outputs and remove the heatsinks to change just one output. But it was only 2 bad outputs and now she is singing. Doesn't sound too bad. A little bass heavy....

I bought that receiver at a pawn shop in the 80's. Ran hotter than hell...and yes it really was and is an ugly beast.

My hat's off to you sir, that is the uglist receiver I have ever seen.

Some of the JVC gear of that era might rival it though. I have a JVC Super Class A amp that stays hidden in the closet. It's matching tuner was so hideous I couldn't even bring myself to pick it off the curb where it had been tossed.

You have to wonder, when they did the mockup for that, did the Kenwood engineers all stand around saying "yeah that looks great!"

Maybe it was one of those 'it seemed like a good idea at the time' things.

My Kenwood KR-4140 gets my vote. (I'll have to try to dig up a picture). Darn thing looks like it has buck-teeth. Puts out some beautiful music though.

That was from the 'more buttons is better era'.

I hate the Technics SA-R921 that I bought in the 80s to replace my broken & lovely Pioneer SX 780 that I bought in the 70s (which I gave to a buddy who had it fixed for 40.00 bucks !!!) I fell for the BPC at Good Guys and bought that thing - uhhh - black - equalizer - digital - how exciting - wrong! I nominate that sucker as I'd love to have my SX 780 back - timeless!

I am sure there are people who would think the styling of the Kenwood is classic and has aged well. Here are a few of them:

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Thank goodness good audio from the 70's never reflected fashion trends or you would have had denim clad Pioneer SX-1050's and earth tone polyester speaker grills in bizarre colors...oh wait a minute, I just looked at my Avid 100's, I guess that last thing did happen.

I don't mind the way it looks, kinda has a 80s Back to the Future look going on. I think alot of the really cheap dark gray plastic receivers of the 90s look worse.
