Understanding Speaker fuses and circuit breaker - Technics SB-X30

I recently bought a pair of Technics SB-X30 and am having some issues getting them to work properly. The issues I am having mostly have to do with a these so-called "Speaker Protector reset buttons" on the backplate of the speakers.

There are three 1.6A fuses(s) on the inside of the backplate. One for each driver.

On the front of the speaker are 2 "equalizer" dials. One for the tweeter, the other for mid-range.

Depending on which button I push and which speaker, I get various results.

Speaker 1... will only emit sound from the tweeter if the button is pushed in ~90%. Even then I have to play with the dial on the front to find a level it likes.
Speaker 1... Will only emit sounds from the mid-range if the button is not pushed. The dial can be set to any level other than "normal"
Speaker 1... Pushing the woofer button has no effect on the sound.

Speaker 2... Will only emit sound from the tweeter if the button is fully pushed in. Again, I have to play around with the dial on the front to find a volume that produces sound.
Speaker 2... Will only emit sound from the mid-range if the dial is pushed ~50%. Again, the dial can be set to any level other than "normal"
Speaker 2... Pushing the woofer button fully causes the woofer to be extremely muffled sounding. Releasing the button reverts the sound back to a normal level.

Using some tape and extreme level of patience I've been able to position the buttons and dials in a way that has all drivers firing at once. I feel safe doing this and keeping the amplifier volume very low until I can figure out a more permanent fix. Having read some other stuff online, these protector buttons can get very finicky over the years and fail completely.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar? Do you have a permanent fix? Are these parts even available anymore? Is there a way to bypass this system?

Unless you're pushing them to their limits I'd consider cutting them from the circuits if ohm readings are consistent.
 
Cut the wires to the potentiometers, (or replace pots) which are probably corroded, and jumper from jacks to corresponding speaker wires.
Check overall resistance as you may have to add some resistance and an updated crossover for amp and speaker safety.
